I can't stand anyone telling that pure maths is superior to applied maths.

 G.H. Hardy (1940): "A Mathematician's Apology"

I read this slim nice book today, sitting fittingly & comfortably enough on the 1st floor of the Cambridge University Press bookshop in Cambridge -- and found it astounding, fresh, honest, clear, to the point. Many years ago I read Hardy's book about Ramanujan, and I have known about the famous "Apology", but not actually read it until today. It is highly recommended, and not only for those with a keen interest in pure mathematics. It deals with intellectual honesty, clear goals, the meaning of work, ambitions, etc. I also appreciate the writing style, a 1930ies type of communicating one's thoughts that I find both charming and effective, and different from anything that is written now.

The edition I read has a long and highly readable preface by C.P. Snow, among the relatively few personal friends of Hardy. It contributes to the essence of the book and has separate value. We also learn more about Hardy the man.

A superb book. Hardy writes this book in the same spirit as he sees pure mathematics- it has no function other than intellectual closure. An apology was never needed and yet we are better off for it.

Classic! A mathematician should read it at least 2-3 times.
