The classic children's book detailing the complexities of learning about yourself, and about finding out what matters in life. This book has it all, from the journey inward back to the journey outward. Full of Fantastica imagery and characters, poignant lessons and hard-won battles with the human ego. Another great read for a child or to a child. Many opportunities for voices too.

My all-time favorite fantasy novel. The book itself is so much richer than the films.

Rich descriptions, incredible storytelling, it will take you on an incomparable flight of imagination. The weaving together of the myriads of worlds, characters, adventures, emotional struggles and cataclysmic events is beautiful.

It can be very light, and very dark. It is filed in bookshops under children's books, but to me, it is an adult book.

It's the one book I've read again and again since 11 until today, until my copy fell to pieces. But I still treasure it dearly.

Ever since I watched the movie, I had always wanted to read this. It was even better than I thought it would be. It's like every fantasy adventure I can imagine thrown into one book. And the fact that the boy who is reading the neverending story becomes involved within the actual book to find out that there is a man who keeps writing the book over and over everyting that happens thus makes the story neverending! WOW I love it. It's one of my favorites.

One of my favorite stories of all time. A touching book about a boy who descends into fantasy to escape the poor relationships he has with friends and his father is well-written, touches your heart, and moves you to tears. One copy is written in two colors, red and green. One is the color of fantasy and one is the color of reality. It helps you see his descent into fantasy and the choices he must make if he is ever to come back to the present. Heartwarming, touching, incredibly descriptive fantasy. This book is a classic that you can re-read. Read it now.

This is a really good book until you get to the halfway point (right where the film ends. At this point Bastian becomes able to re-create the entire world of Fantasia but in doing so becomes a spoiled little brat. I stopped liking the book at this point and struggled to complete it.

Although outdated, the movie is still a favorite & inspired me to read the book it was based on. I was surprised to find that the movie ends roughly in the middle of the book! There is a moral entwined in the book that is missed by the abbreviated movie. I am blown away by Micheal Ende's imagination and found myself to be a part of the Neverending Story, reading about Bastian reading about Atreyu! (Who's reading ME reading it???) Once you have traveled with Bastian into the story you are in Fantasica for many years, through battles & adventures before the story...ironically...end's ;)

Which reader wouldn't love "Neverending story"? Michael Ende almost manages to create one with this book. There has been several movies made based on this book, and I'm sure there would be more to come, if people were interested, but I also think they might prefer their own adventures in the land of the pale princess in moontower...

I can't remember when I first read this book but I do remember falling truly in love with Atreyu. I loved his name so much that I wanted my 1st born son to have it as a middle name. He is the epitomy of a braveheart. He is fearless, a warrior with a perservering spirit. The one theme I gathered from this book was fear. Fear of what was to come or the unknown and how it could change everything. This book also enlightened my thinking about our dependence on each other as human beings. We never know who will be placed in our path to help up on our journey because we're all connected and it is through that connection that we reach goals and fulfill destinies. I love this book and I would recommend it to anyone who has an active imagination and to those who believe in the power of the relentless human spirit.

"The never-ending story" in English. One of the best fairy tales - about "Fantasia" - the land of imaginations that is getting eaten by the "Nichts" (which by the way you can see sometimes in Swakop when the mist is really thick) because children don't read books anymore, and don't use their imagination no more. And a tale of adventures how they then try to save Fantasia land. That they made a movie out of this book, of course, is defeating the whole point of Ende, and is a pity. Michael Ende also wrote Momo, which is better. And, as I found out now, "Jim Knopf und Lukas der Lokomotivführer" = Jim Button and Luke the Engine drivers. Also one of the best children's book, that I listened to as a child.

If your only experience with this timeless classic is the thoroughly cheesy (though admittedly fun) movie version from the Eighties, you must put aside all your preconceived notions of the plot and characters. Manheim's translation of Ende's German is filled with a delicate beauty.

If at all possible, I heartily recommend scaring up a hardcover copy of this treasure -- it is in color, and there are lavish bookplates that adorn each chapter, which pale in comparison in the black-and-white paperback edition.

I had seen the movies, but I was not so prepared for this. This book is very weird. It follows geeky boy Sebastian as he enters the magical world of Fantasia, which he must save.

That's not that strange of a premise, but the details and how it is written are maybe very German - definitely not normal. Fantasia is populated by characters from peoples' imaginations, and everything in it has some tie in to fiction and the act of creation. Sebastian travels through Fantasia, but his real struggle as he begins to realize occurs in his mind.

If you loved the film, stop reading now. I hated the film, I can't say how much I despised that the film and this book even share the same title.

My reading experience of The Neverending Story, in a beautifully bound edition with gold edges and red and green script, was otherworldly. The scene where Bastian splits the sky open and sees himself sitting in the attic room reading had a profound spiritual effect on me, of the sort only art with the highest integrity can provide.

I almost dare not read the book a second time (ref. my review of Jane Eyre) for fear of spoiling what remains one of the most memorable experiences of my lifetime.

I adore children's fairy tales, and this one tops my list. It has incredibly strong character development that the films never reveal, and a deep story that rivals the epic qualities of Lord of the Rings. This edition is especially compelling as it's printed in red and green ink - to differentiate between the two worlds that are traversed through. You really ought to read it in this format, it's the only way to experience Michael Ende's true vision. :)

SO much better than the movie!!! The film only does just over the first 1/3 of the book, but most criminally, it glosses over the metaphysical elements of the book; sure, Bastian enters the book, but it's just a twist, not a paradigm shift like it is in the book. The concepts of memory, "real reality" versus "imagined reality", consensus history (or consensus future) are all touched on in the book, which is why you should read it!

The original film is one of my favourite kids movies from my childhood so for years I had been curious about the original book. It didn't dissapoint either this is a very enjoyable book.

Basically a book of two halves the first part is covered quite faithfully by the original movie. Obviously there are characters and situations different (some not in the movie which with the technology in the 80's might not have been possible). The second half is almost something completely new, a story about a wandering god who creates as he travels through the land of Fantastica but in doing so loses himself and gradually all that he once was. The second movie did cover a little bit of this but didn't do it any justice.

I actually prefer the first half as the enemy feels far more sinister. Gmork in particular is as in the movie menacing and evil. Characters not in the movie mostly impress as well. The threat being external feels like a race against time. The second half the threat until later on has no time limit and is internal. The character's do impress but leave less of an impression for me, the building of the army is fantastic image as well as Xayide's travelling means.

If these were put to film again I'd prefer to see a glossy anime series or something of the likes. A film would be good but to adapt the second half might be a little difficult. I still think the name given to the Childlike empress in the book doesn't work as well as the more personal one in the film that we never hear though. Unless that's why you didn't hear it in the movie because it would have been odd if his Mother was called that.
