A wonderful sequel although I wish this had just been one book to begin with. Don't read this unless you've read Empress Orchid or you'll be very lost. I found this book great read. Again it is not light reading and all the people and stuff can get kind of confusing.

Excellently written historical novel (part of a set) about a woman who rises from being an unknown concubine to becoming the most powerful individual in China. It was a wonderful read!

It was an OK read not as good as empress orchid and all the interesting stuff was skipped over leaving mostly dry details. It was a like able read though

Interesting to look at the mighty empress from her human side; Anchee Min has done an excellent job in portraying the famous lady leader in her emotions and in making more than our everyday life decisions and how she made her way to power. A great storytelling from another human's point of view!

Not sure if I could deem it better than its prequel, but undoubtedly not a disappointment like most sequels are. Quite enjoyable to read! Of course, the true history of events are called into question, but that's to be expected since it is fiction. Still, it is a good read with remarkable insight into the history of Chinese royalty.

Good read on life of China's last Empress, hard to figure the names of who's who, and can't take novel for real, but somehow it's a very different view of what's Lady Orchid is and a good review on Chinese history

While I didn't enjoy The Last Empress nearly as much as Empress Orchid, I still found it an interesting read - gaining a lot of insight in the workings and dealings of China's past. I found the book lacking soul and found it it a bit rigid in times.

this book shows you the last empress's view and vision. She was portrayed by china as the dragon lady, however, this book shows a whole different side of her. You will empathize.

Was OK. The first one was so much better. I loved the first one. This one was a little too much like a history book.
