While I wouldn't rate this among the best of the Discworld books it is notable for the introduction of several characters. It also sets up the whole City Watch group of stories (perhaps moreso than _Guards! Guards!_ which is the first appearance of Sam, Carrot, and Lady Sibyl).

The continuing saga of Sam Vimes, Carrot Ironfounderson, Fred Colon and Nobby Nobbs otherwise known as the Ankh-Morpork City Watch.One of the darker Discworld novels and, although the series as a whole is known for being light and airy, the darkness works for this story. One of my personal favourite Watch books for the introduction of Angua and the continuing evolution of Detritus and Gaspode.

The watch becomes an equal opportunity employer. They're taking Dwarves, Trolls, Werewolves...even a 'Woman'. And you know that saying:"Guns don't kill people, people do." Well it's not true, they've got minds of their own you know.
