What can one say about this novel that hasn't already been said? It's the best novel ever. It's the best romance ever. I have a feeling that the review section for this book is just going to be a long string of girls gushing over how much this book means to them...and there is nothing wrong with that, because that is exactly what I'm going to do. The reason that this book is still loved so much today is because it is the most satisfying love story that any author has ever written. Every girl wants there own Mr. Darcy of sorts, and every woman wants to be Elizabeth. Every time I finish this book, I take a long sigh and lean back. It's like a good cup of coffee, a nice piece of dark chocolate, a warm blanket on a chilly day. This novel is flipping amazing! And my boyfriend loves it too! Whoppeee!

OK, so the plot has been done before, and there's nothing particularly new about it, but the sheer brilliance with which Austen wrote about ordinary people really makes this book. I love the characters; I have fallen head over heels in love with Mr Darcy time after time; I laugh and Mr Bennet's remarks and I wince at Mr Collins and Mrs Bennet. I adore this book, and the 1995 version of it is just as wonderful (especially Mr Darcy...!)

Who doesn't like Pride and Prejudice? Arguably the best of Jane Austen's books, because the heroine grows and changes and learns to understand herself throughout the story. And the satire of late 18th century English society is priceless.
Who doesn't love Pride and Prejudice? An constant object for re-reading, at least for me. I think this is Jane Austen's best, and I love the satirical views. Elizabeth is a wonderful heroine, because we see her as a young woman, who then recognizes how wrong she has been to believe that she always understands people. She becomes a better person for doing so. Her growth is very quiet and subtle within the book, but it is clearly there.

A witty and entertaining novel of manners, and a particularly interesting read for anyone who enjoys modern Regency romances. It's a lot of fun to look at what really started the genre off, way back when -- this is, at present, the only Austen novel I've read, though I'm moving on to the others, but I can already tell that Lizzy and Mr Darcy are the rock stars of the Austen world for a reason. Their complex interplay and wonderfully developed characters drive the novel forward -- following their journeys is quite rewarding. This novel is also a good look at the life of country gentry in the early 19th century -- it was certainly its own world, and I liked getting such a peek at it.

A very well written book for a first time author. It is told by a daughter using her mother's voice. I did not realize that there was such a large population of Jews who had fled to Shangai, when no one else would take them, during WWII. I have been wanting to read this book for quite a while and, finally, decided to when I found out that the author is coming to town soon. I look forward to hearing her speak and go into more detail since the book does not follow the family assimilating in Canada after the war.

Probably my favorite of all the Austen novels. I consider this the zenith of her almost ungodly ability to bring out the humor in regency-era England and how she manages to make fun of (then) contemporary issues without ever actually making them caricatures of themselves. The characters are real, the stories absorb you, and the romance between Elizabeth Bennet and William Darcy is probably one of the most romantic stories EVAH. =) LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE, if I could have Hollywood remake this movie every couple of years, I would. I tend to like any kind of Pride and Prejudice, whether the Bollywood version, the teen version, the modern version, both BBC versions (1980 and 1995), and yes, yes, the Kiera Knightly movie too. =) It's all gold to me!

The perfect ideal romantic story. This is one of my favorite stories in the entire world, and though I'm not amazingly well read, I'm positive it will remain so in any form I find it. I'm thankful that the two popular film adaptations of this story were so lovingly done (and also the old CSPAN Book TV reenactment that first introduced me to this tale), or I might not have ever sat down to actually read the novel itself. The novel contains language that constantly delights and entertains the reader with its subtle wit while perfected characters leave little doubt as to why Jane Austen is such a remembered author.

this book never fails to bring a smile to my face. from the very first sentence. a very satirical piece on human nature when it comes to marriage.it fares well over the years cuz ppl havent changed all that much. there's the ever vigilant mother on the lookout for a potential husband. The stupid father who doesn't give a damn abt anyone but himself. The heroine n hero n blah blah blah. but what makes it truly a gem is the language. very well written conversations that flow so well and contain much wit.the characters and their reactions are so funny. yeah. it's enjoyable if u like the language.

First of all, who doesn’t enjoy the entangled struggle of love against societal pressures? But aside from this traditional indulgence, I have to say that as a die hard feminist, the strength of Elizabeth in this novel is simply invigorating. Looking at the revolutionary nature of Jane Austen’s novel, not only the plot but the historical context around the book is fascinating. While sometimes the language seems to run a little dry (as a style though, it is venerable although personally not my favorite), there is always an undertone, theme, or plot twist which keeps this book engaging. While first seemingly distant, by the end all the characters are not only relatable, but have a life of their own (yea for the gradual breaking down of polite facades!). In short, an absolutely wonderful book!

This is my favorite book of ALL TIME. I have read it about 20 times. I love the writing, of course, but what I really like is that the heroine isn't some mousy gal whose only hope is to marry whoever she is told to marry. This heroine is intelligent, full of life, fiercely protective of her eldest sister, but also isn't so sudden that she can't re-think first impressions (the original title of the book). Good twists and turns, wonderful language and descriptions that will make you want to see the English countryside by horse-drawn carriage.

I know you hear it recommended over and over, but Pride & Prejudice is just an excellent, classically romantic piece of writing! [And the A&E/BBC mini-series of Pride & Prejudice, staring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth starred as Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, is also wonderful!] Actually, I have enjoyed all of Jane Austen's novels, but this is my favorite!
As a 'cross reference' of sorts, Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, is also excellent! Curl up in a quiet room with a cup of tea and get swept away!

Of all the genres I read, and all the books I love, this book is definitely my favorite. Austen's writing is always funny, simple, and intelligent, but this books stands out from all her other works. It is not too preachy, and her characters are charming but believable, all of them. Their downfalls are prefectly human. They are all people that you could have sworn you've met or known. And even though she clearly shows their mistakes and their follies, she is non-judgmental, and we enjoy each and every one of them.
I own five copies of this book! The only book I bought more than once... One is the first copy I read, one for its cover, one for its binding, one was a gift, and one is in the complete works. And I read it every year! That's how much I love this book.

I hate to give it only an average rating since it's a classic, but Pride and Prejudice was slow at first. The style of writing was refreshing, because it was more refined than modern day english. The characters weren't very well rounded and stayed with one trait from beginning to end. (Except, of course, Elizabeth and Darcy, the main characters)
Soon I was drawn to the forbidden love story, but the ending was so unbelievably disappointing. I would have preferred a descriptive proposal, thank you!
As any classic, the book is very symbolic but that's about it. Sure, some parts were charming (and you can't help but keep reading as you see both sides of the forbidden love), and Elizabeth was a very entertaining character, but that's not enough.

I will never tire of the amazing language in this book! The sentences, however long they may be, sometimes feels like beautiful poetry, and being at the same time filled with human insight.. they turn into pieces of art!And the humour.. superb! My all time favourite classic!! I read it in 1993, and was soon longing to find an old precious, english copy! Found by accident, a couple of years later.. a burgundy, leathery clad, boxed, english copy, with gold letters.. IN MY FATHERS BOOKSHELF!! (We are from Norway, you know) So this was totally amazing, and it blew me away!Of course he gave it to me..

This book is a wonderful read. The characters are engaging, and along with the main characters in the book you dislike some characters, and prefer others. The style of writing draws readers into a world we can only imagine, and teaches us about the social differences that we may not see so pointedly in today's society, but to a certain extent are still relevant. Some people may not find this book so easy to read, your imagination certainly has to be big to carry along with the story, but if you combine this, the BBC version, and the movie version you can complete the picture. You don't need any modern day scenes to view and appreciate this timeless romantic story, you just have to let yourself believe that this could've taken place.

I have to admit that although I have enjoyed the screen adaptations of P&P I hate the book. Perhaps I can't cope with Mrs. Bennett, who knows? I had to read this in 5th yr (that'll be yr11) for English Literature and hated it then but thought as an adult I'd give it another go!!!!! Don't know why I bothered because I still find it a tedious read.

This is a great book for anyone who loves old classic novels and romance stories.

It is about a young woman named Elizabeth Bennett. She has four sisters, an almost obnoxious mother who constantly creates designs to marry off her daughters, and a studious father who loves to watch his entertaining family in their various pursuits.
Charles Bingley, a rich and handsome young man, is enamored with Jane, Elizabeth's elder sister; his friend, Mr. Darcy (who is richer than Bingley) falls in love with Elizabeth, who is put off by his proud state.
It is about how their lives and relationships develop and how they conclude, and about how pride and prejudice can be overcome to give way for happiness.
