I love Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy. Done and done. For film adaptations, the Greer Garson, Laurence Olivier version is terrible. (But strangely, they sing a song called The Fox in the film...which one of my favorite bands, Nickel Creek does a great cover on their debut album haha)Anyway----the BBC version with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth is fantastic. It's worth the six hours. the Keira Knightly and Matthew MacFayden version is a gorgeous film. MacFayden is a perfect Darcy. I wouldn't say Knightly was my image of Elizabeth from reading..but she didn't a pretty darn good job.

It was ok. I just found some of the talk to be hard to follow. I suppose It just wasn't my cup of tea.

Jean Austin portrays how complicated love can be in some cases. It also shows how people can judge without knowing the whole story Mr. Darcy is like a lot of men who hold there true feelings inside till its almost at the breaking point of a friendship. It is also a portrayal of how stupidity can run rampant in society. What if a woman did not want to get married? What if a woman during this time wanted to live by a pen? It would not be easy but it could be done. This book shows what happens when parents try to force marriage on there children when the children are unwilling to take someone’s hand in marriage.

Must surely be in the top three most popular books in English Lit.JA quietly and elegantly poking fun at her own characters, who must be based on people she knew in her (very) closed-in society. The plot structure is strong; the whole story is based on a key episode - Darcy's first proposal of marriage to Lizzie Bennett. The whole of the first part of the book is really leading up to that marvellous scene; the second part of the book is referring back to it constantly.
A national treasure, nothing less. If I hadn't read this I would have become Mr. Collins. Now I'm Mr Micawber instead.
Masterpiece

marriages for penniless girls such as the Bennets are hard to come by, and even Lizzy, who comes to sincerely value Mr. Darcy, remarks when asked when she first began to love him: "It has been coming on so gradually, that I hardly know when it began. But I believe I must date it from my first seeing his beautiful grounds at Pemberley." She may be joking, but there's more than a little truth to her sentiment, as well. Jane Austen considered Elizabeth Bennet "as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print". Readers of Pride and Prejudice would be hard-pressed to disagree

An amazing book which shows the British Culture during the ancient times. The author has portrayed all the characters in an excellent manner. The headstrong Elizabeth, the proud Darcy, the vulnerable Jane, the smart Bingley, the snobbish Caroline, sensible Gardiner, pompous Collins, haughty catherine de la bourgh, foolish lydia and the dangerous wickham. Each and every character has been potrayed beautifully. I throughly enjoyed reading the book. This book is one of my favourites.

The machinations behind the scenes in this book are so much fun to follow. I still read my first version of it -cost 95 cents- from 1963- every year.

A alternately scathing and approbious, but always insightful and incisive dissection of upper middle class and lower gentility castes in the UK, the book is a fast read and a good story. At its best, it's witty and endearing, though the character growth is predictable, linear, and lacking in subtlety or shadings; at its worst it sounds like a spectacularly intelligent and OED-addicted version of Alicia Silverstone (the italics are fascinating prescient of Valley-speak). Read for the wit and jokes and happy-ending love story, not for intense insights into human character, whether tragedy or triumph (see Conrad instead).

There is a reason this story is copied ad nauseum. It is the perfect love story. Elizabeth is also a very intriguing character. Self-assured, intelligent and loyal to a fault. These qualities are to her benefit and potentially her downfall but her inquisitive nature prevails. She cannot help but solve a puzzle which leads her to question her family and herself and to gain a true understanding of herself. Her strong nature leads Mr. Darcy to do the same.

Having loathed English at school, I decided about 10 years ago that I should really have a go at some of the classics, and started with Jane Austen. Well, I discovered that I love everything she's written. Her books are witty and insightful with lots of very strong female characters. Elizabeth Bennett is one of the best Austen characters - sticks to her principles and won't compromise where love is concerned. Mrs Bennett is pure comedy. And then there's Darcy - need I say more...

I love the story of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy! Its so fantastically romantic without being gooey and ooshey. Boy sees girl across room. Boy is not impressed. Girl overhears boy saying non-nice things about her. Trouble ensues.

It really is a great love story, but the best part of the book is how funny it is! Elizabeth is practically the only sane person in a family of crazies. Like most stories, it might take a while for the story to pick up some momentum, but once it does its a quick read.

I hated PP&Z. But I wanted to see how horribly he butchered the original (since I know horrible me I had never read it). I loved it! Austen did not need zombies. The book is delightful and made me want to keep reading. A sweet, still all too modern, love story. Darcy is believable. Elizabeth's voice is still fresh. Her worries and thoughts are completely contemporary. Definitely worth the read.

Rare that you ever get to say this, especially when the book is so good, but in this case I actually prefer the film..brings the sparkling wit to life.

Jane Austen is a firm favourite, but I prefer the Bronte sisters for their beautiful savagery and refusal to have their corsets QUITE so tightly laced ;)

Continuing through the Austen books, it was fun to return to Pride and Prejudice. The novel is very witty, but I couldn't help picturing the cast of the BBC dramatization and thinking how perfectly they had filled the roles that Austen wrote for them. The book does provide more subtlety, I think, about Elizabeth Bennett's reversal of opinion about Mr. Darcy. And I also saw much more depth to Miss Jane Bennett's character, in her tendency to assume the best about everyone's intentions. I also saw more clearly the faults of the father, who is perhaps more sympathetically portrayed in the movie version.

A love story I actually love. The longing, the lying, the secret desire, the formality, opposites coming together. If we could all sift through the b.s. in life and just get to the end result, it'd be great. But not nearly as emotional.
