I don't know if I have understood everything Kafka has to say here, but existentialism, at least what I understand of it, is a philosophy I buy into.

It is impossible to write a review on this very book, as well as on Kafka´s novels. I would say that the possible review would be one which points out the vertigo in which the reader is put by Kafka.
When the long short story begins, - because it is not a novel - a poor bug is there. And the bug is thinking as Gregor used to think. There is then a division in body-mind to the favour of neither.

The body is unalterable, and it is bound to win. So it does. And the grim Kafka - writing in the night - then depicts one of his sisters as a heroine. She is in the story, - I guess. And I wouldn´t mind pointing out that the real story is the story of what happened before the story begins. What was the cause of the metamorphosis? The impossibility of reading the story itself is carrying the reader to this question: "Why was Gregor ever transformed?"

There are in the history of literature many answers to this question. Because of a conflict between G. and society, between G. and his father and more.

It is possible to lay aside all hopes on discovering meaning in this story and to enjoy the prose ( only in the German version ). It is great allusions to the Freudian manner of thinking in the little book, and what remains to be said is that it is unique, that nobody has ever repeated any such feat as Kafka´s and that Kafka himself, when he was about to die at the age of 42 told people to burn all his books and papers and so on, but : he excluded The Metamorphosis and a few other short story, (f.ex. The Verdict and The Hunger artist ).Kafka was opposed to illustrations of the book. He would not accept any cover picture, and he was really determined ( he seldom was ) that if there was to be any cover illustration, it should at least not be a picture of a vermin.
