The shrike is an awesome monster. The book is dark. Some characters are stereotyped; the poet goes around reciting poetry in normal conversation; people don't tend to do that unless they are a giant ass. Kind of annoyed me. Other thoughts: this is only one part of the full story; it ends abruptly with nothing resolved, so if you want to read this book, you have to read the second as well.

Hyperion est probablement un des meilleurs romans de science fiction qui est jamais été écrit. Mêlant science fiction et mythologie, Dan Simmons y fait preuve d'une imagination incroyable. La science derrière le livre est extraordinaire et sans reproche. C'est un livre à lire absolument.

Annoyingly only really sets the stage for following books. However the individual stories of the each of the characters (a priest, poet, soldier, PI, consul and academic - the story of the tree-ship captain is skipped when he mysteriously dissappears) were interesting, drawing you to want to read the following book(s) to find out how they are linked together and how the Shrike is involved.
