Inredible feminist and Eco SF. Explores the nature of social heirarchy and what it truly means. Plus, its a real page turner of a who-dunnit.

This is one of those books I love to come back to and reread. Typical of Tepper, there is a strong female protagonist at odds with the men and the world around her. Themes explored in this book are religion, biracial relationships, politics and parenting.

Brilliant book of aliens and family dynamics. Hooked me on the rest of Tepper's works (not that all of them live up to this one...)

A true masterpiece of sci-fi literature. This was the first Tepper book I have ever read. I read everything she writes now.

The novel is set on an incredible prairie world, covered almost entirely with various sorts of grasses. The human population of Grass is dominated by the 'bons'. This is a world that does not welcome outsiders. A summary would not do this book justice... it needs to be read, so I will say no more. Highly recommended.

Loved the book but was vaguely unsatisfied by the ending. As always, Tepper manages to create a truly believable alien world that's just familiar enough to be readable but strange enough to be completely unexpected.

What a great book! It's Science Fiction with an extra brain. The characters have a lot of depth and the story well thought out.
I could not put it down and read it religiously. Even Zanie zoomed through it in a flash...and she is usually not too interested in my books

Very good! I had never heard of her before recently, on a list of best sci-fi books. I have read 3 of hers so far, and all have been excellent. Very original ideas.

An elaborate word dominated by grass (of many types). A society dominated by a social caste of estancias and fox hunting. Strange animals stand in for the traditional elements of horse, hound and fox. Something is very odd about who may be controlling who.

Sheri S Tepper explores social norms and conventions, societies, male dominance and religious ideologies - good and bad aspects. All of this exploration in well crafted unusual, beautiful and sometimes bazaar settings.

Not a desert planet like Dune, or a winter planet like Gethen, but a planet of Grass. Millions of square miles of it, beautifully described. This memorable story is partly a satire and critique of class systems and of religion, both seen as too parochial and limited to cope with the larger universe. The aristocrats on Grass think they’re in control of everything but are anything but, while the clergy are largely incapable of imagining other sentient species, creatures as intelligent or more so than human beings. Both fail when they finally encounter the truly alien: the monstrous hippae and the bizarre, strangely endearing foxen. But it’s an Earth aristocrat, with the delicious name of Marjorie Westriding-Yrarier, who through her love of horses proves most capable of relating to the Other, a central motif in science fiction. Both she and the other characters are believable and memorable, and I enjoyed this novel more and more as it went along, with one fascinating twist following another. It does what science fiction should do: makes you think, and expands your consciousness to include things you’d never imagined before. ‘Grass’ is the first book I’ve read by Tepper, but it won’t be the last. And it actually made me fond of horses!

I love the feel of the world created in this book; I can smell the grass and hear the rustle of the leaves even though it must be a decade since I read it. My favourite Sheri Tepper, which does not go overboard on the feminism, world overpopulation/environment and religion themes of her writing, but includes these topics in a very palatable (to me) form. The story seemed to get darker and more sinister. The grassland is unrelenting. The characters are all hiding something. About time for a re-read I think!

This is my favourite book of all time. It was the first Sherri Tepper I ever read, and I immediately went out and bought copies for all my friends and family. I think I have read every Sherri Tepper now, and love them all, but for me this one is by far the best.

One of the few Sci-Fi books I've read. Also one of the few books I've "reread"! Love this book- as I do all of the Tepper books I've read.

Pros: several complex plot lines that all get resolved satisfactorily, interesting characters that develop over the course of the book, detailed world building - for the planet Grass as well as Earth and the rest of the universe (even though the rest of the universe isn't mentioned much)

Cons: can't think of any

Grass is a planet with no reports of plague victims in a universe of worlds dying of the plague.

Lady Marjorie Westriding Yarier and her family are sent by Sanctity, the dominant religion in the universe (though they are old catholics), to see if it really is free of plague, and/or if there is a cure for the plague on the planet. They are chosen because the nobles on Grass ride the hunt, and the Yarier family is good with horses.

Unknown to them, the bons ride Hippae, and the Hippae are not horses. They are malevolent creatures with unknown motivations.

The green brothers live on Grass, digging up the ruins of a civilization that died out centuries before. A race that may have died of the plague.

There are a lot of politics and a lot of revelations you won't be prepared for. It's a creepy novel at some parts, a tragic one at others. It is well worth the read.
