Descriptions are cumbersome. At the end, this cylinder in space gives away no secret, no reason, no explanation. Unstatisfaying.

An absolute science fiction master-pice, a must-have for any "real" science-fiction fan, full of scientific references which we are most likely to reach in the near future. I love the uneasy feeling which fills you at the end

If you can bend your brain to think like it has never thought before and can grasp some major concepts of space and time, this is a fantastic read. By the way, I ain't no scientist/mathematician and it was still a wonderful, fantasy world that is well worth the visit. Another on my list of to-read's again.

So we find this comet/asteroid on a one-shot trip of the solar system is actually an alien artifact, and there's only one ship in range to explore it before it leaves.

The characters are pretty one dimensional but thats a minor quibble as the major part of the book is exploration of an alien spacecraft. The vision and scope of the book is huge and there are three more books in the series, not as good mind but still worth a read.

Its an old book and I read it quite some time ago, but it has never left my psyche till now. Undoubtedly one of Sir Clarke's outstanding works. A must read for anyone who wants a simple, engaging and exciting introduction to SF.

A intricate story that is being wound around a alien space craft that enters the solar system from the far reaches of space... Some people fear... some wonder about the motive behind this alien arrival... A manned space craft visits this amazing visitor... Many mysteries are unraveled as they explore the interior of the space craft .... However many remain unresolved.... .. An amazing story that will forever change the way we look at the universe ....
