I didn't know it at the time, but there is nothing better than a robot mystery novel.

Writers of Sci Fi take note. In this small tome, Mr Asmimov has managed to create an overpopulated planet, a sparsely created galaxy, and a murder mystery that manages to tie together. All this is a such a small tome speaks highly of his talent of writer, filling you with so much history, so many images, and telling it all with two mismatched policemen.

This is a book (and series), that I often return to for the above reason. Only the story is served, and it is told at a fast pace. Even the down time moves fast.

And ideal book for any fan of Mr Asimov (although they would have read it), and those who are new to genre looking for more than the movies.

As beginning of the Saga of the Foundations, this book leaves something to wish, but taking into account that was written more than 40 years ago that is understandable. Even so the book is entertaininig enough and it presents a character essential for the Saga.

The struggle between the Spacers, Earthmen who a long time ago colonized outer worlds, trying to get the Earthmen to abandon their Caves of Steel way of life and colonize outer uninhabited worlds, and the Medievalists who oppose the Spacers and their Robots, a sort of Fundamentalists.
Around this general idea, a murder of a Spacer Scientist gets to be solved by Baily, the Earthman detective and his robot partner.
This is the second in the chronological order that Mr. Asimov himself set in order to read his epic novels because each one is like a brick in a large building.
Can't wait to read the next one ... The Naked Sun.

1st book in Isaac Asimov’s Robot series and I must admit that this was quite the read. Started and finished it in only a couple of sittings. I’ll confess that the first one or two chapters mystified me a little as I was thrust into not just a scientifically advanced world but a world that was very different from ours in many respects. Spacers! Humanoid robots! All of mankind crowded into cities which were not cities but Caves of Steel! Their lives and the circumstances under which they must live. Absolutely amazing concepts! And to top it all off, Isaac manages to place a murder mystery smack-dab in the middle of all of this madness. Amazing! Absolutely Amazing! A must read to anyone and everyone, whether you be a fan of Isaac Asimov or not.

Possibly one of the greatest sets of sci-fi you can get, the robot series is everything great sci-fi can be. All of them are worth reading. simple at first glance, they ask questions that are very deep if you follow it through.
