Sir Doyle created a masterpiece of epic proportions. 221b became one of the most famous and everlasting apartment numbers in the world. Deduction, a byword for enigmatic problems solving. Each and every story could be read several times and new ideas would instantly spring into ones mind. I read in order to be challenge, and Doyle creates the perfect environment for an intellectual exploration.
stupendous, baronial, brilliant, admirable, alluring, angelic. Need I say more?

Have not finished all of the tales, but they're a wonderful read all the same. Requires patience and love for the detective, but it's well worth it for the short little mysteries that Doyle conjured up. If you find you're too busy, distracted, or straight up lazy to finish all the stories as I was (I'm a bastard, I know) then I highly recommend the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes series created by the BBC starring Jeremy Brett. That man makes Sherlock Holmes as great as he should be. Brett was amazing and so was Conan Doyle. Good stuff and hard to beat in terms of the detective genre.

After growing up reading, or having read to me at school the likes of The Famous Five, Enclopaedia Brown and Cam Jansen, the Sherlock Holmes stories were the first adult detective fiction that I read.

Put simply, these stories rank as some of the best detective fiction ever written.

My favorites are 'A Study in Scarlet', 'The Case of the Speckled Band', 'The Final Problem', and 'The Hound of the Baskervilles.'

Great for sitting in a comfortable armchair, and being transported in the imagination as England in the Victorian era is brought to life.

If there are any criticisms to make, it is about the hint of antisemitism that comes across in some Holmes stories.

Yet, this is apparent in other nineteenth century literature as well.

although the stories seemed to be predictable as i've watched many detective movies/tv serials, and needn't mention that they were the scraps of this great book.so if we forget those, its undoubtedly a master-piece.

I thought it would be fun to return to these stories, and it was for the most part. Some of the stories are excellent, but some of them were of lower quality.

I had forgotten what a jerk Holmes was, and Watson is a bit of a sycophant. Still, the stories are definitely worth a read. Maybe going through all of them at one time is not the best way to do it, though.

When you actually read the Sherlock Holmes stories, just ignore all the stereotypes you've been taught since childhood. Holmes and Watson are even more intriguing than the mysteries they solve. These books are more magical than any fantasy novel. You will get so caught up in Holmes's and Watson's adventures that you'll feel like you live right there in 221B Baker Street with them.

If you want to watch a televised Sherlock Holmes series, I recommend the Jeremy Brett version. Basil Rathbone makes a good Holmes, but while Nigel Bruce's bumbling Watson is a good character, he does not nearly live up to the real, Doyle-created watson, who is an intelligent doctor and capable companion to Holmes.

This volume, authorized by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's estate, contains all 4 full-length novels and all 56 short stories featuring Sherlock Holmes. At over a thousand pages, the weighty tome is a perfect gift for budding amateur sleuths, and it is an ideal companion for a long stay on a desert island (or a leisurely trip through the English countryside). As the reader wades past the tense introductions of A Study in Scarlet and moves towards such classic tales as The Hound of the Baskervilles, "The Adventure of the Speckled Band," and "The Final Problem," she is sure to draw her own conclusions about Holmes's veiled past and his quirky relationship with his "Boswell," Watson. Doyle never revealed much about Holmes's early life, but the joy of reading the complete Holmes is assembling the trivia of each story into something like a portrait of the detective and his creator. By the end of the long journey through London and across Europe (with a long stopover at Reichenbach Falls), one is apt to have found a friend for life.

Truly Amazing, I have only read 2 of the stories so far but it is amazing to see such a character as Sherlock Holmes, who seems very contemporary a character, being written 2 centuries ago. Although these were written in the late 18th and early 19th century, they are great and will capture anyone's attention.
