hitchhiking with big thumbs really does work! i hitched a ride while standing under a sign that said "no hitchhiking, pick up is illegal" with a tennis ball on my thumb and got a ride!

A 'must read' when backpacking along lonely long stretches of road in crowded third world buses...

As a hitch-hiker, I choose Sissy as my mentor, hero, guru. Sorry about that prince, though. Not the best decision she ever made. She should have stayed with the Chink. Personally, I think Doloris Del Rio is a great shaman! And Jellybean Bonanza is riding wildly like the wind somewhere west of here...

I wrote a fangirl mash note to Tom Robbins about my love for the character of Sissy Hankshaw and he wrote back, so graciously (because I'm sure my note would embarrass me now -- I was young and kinda dumb). Anyway, Sissy was a woman who just ... as long as she stayed moving, things would be okay. Loved her.

This book was addictive for me at first. I loved the first 3/4 of it. It was a very visceral read and at times I felt like I could taste and smell the events. The leading lady was unique, powerful and sexy. The last quarter of the book fell apart for me. I felt like the book took a turn that was unexpected and mundane for such a killer beginning. I still give it 4 stars because I'd recommend anyone to read it.

My first Robbins - I still read this book every few years, although I now have other Robbins books that have risen above this one.

EVEN COWGIRLS GET THE BLUES begins with Tom Robbins' ode to a thumb and evolves into the story of Sissy Hankshaw, fashion model, lesbian ranch hand and counterculture heroine. The Book is a wonderful vehicle for Robbins' inventive, sexual, free-ranging prose. Made into a forgettable movie starring Uma Thurman, Angie Dickinson, Keanu Reeves, Crispin Glover, Carol Kane and Gracie Zabriskie.
