One of those books I wished would have just kept on going. Gibson created a wonderful world and vivid characters - I was sad to see that this was just a stand-alone book, rather than part of a series. The setting is standard Gibson - near future in which computer hackers and privatized police vie with each other in a corporate-owned California. This book has a much lighter touch than his others, and is genuinely funny. It also has more of an action plot than usual - you are dropped right in the middle of a chase story that never stops. Gibson skillfully uses the plot to explain the world that his characters inhabit - this is NOT one of those sf novels that stops for long sections of exposition (cough, Oryx and Crake, cough). I was surprised at how easily the evil conspiracy is stopped at the end of the book, but it was fun to find Gibson in a lighter, less despairing, and more generous mood than usual.

I have enjoyed alot of William Gibson's books, but this was not one of them. Some people might be annoyed by the incorrect prognostications of life in 2008, but I actually enjoyed that aspect of the novel. My main problem was trying to gain the insight into whether the main tension in the plot line involved anything other than a bunch of powerful folks fighting over... a thing? Sure, there are lots of relationships between different folks that occur over this, but I didn't find the central object of their efforts very convincing. Personally, I have enjoyed Gibson's later work, such as Spook Country and especially Pattern Recognition, far more than Virtual Light.

 so so.
Spent a lot of time in this book in some of Gibson's familiar environments. Most notable "post-apacalyptic"(?) San Fran.
It was interesting to read, because having been a former bike messenger, one of the main characters is one. The outsiders take on certain things was interesting.
Not sure if I woudl recommeng this though, except only to someone who already was a William Gibson fan

typical Gibson, male + female characters with their own stories that intersect, focus on technology and odd living situations. In this case, glasses that let you see overlays on the world and homeless people taking over a bridge.

The first Gibson book I've read. Very involving, very exciting, very funny, very believable. The denouement is pure comedy.

I finally gave up on this book. In a way I wish I hadn't it because I got so far - read almost 200 of the 300 pages. But at the same time I wish I'd given up on it earlier because, after reading Idoru, this book was such a disappointment. Both novels are part of Gibson's Bridge trilogy. The universe of Virtual Light however, is less advanced than the Idoru one, and thus closer to our present. There are less innovations and advancements in technology and, furthermore, Gibson isn't particularly detailed in his descriptions of the world this time, which for me is a minus. There are no interesting new gizmos, and no explanations as to how things work. The characters are not very well drawn - I had to keep checking who is who, that's how memorable they were. And, last but not least, the plot just felt so contrived and boring. There were some similar storylines between the two books: e.g. underage girl gets involved in something dangerous/illegal/way out of her league. The difference was that I loved Chia (the girl in Idoru) and found Chevette (the girl in VL) boring as hell. I couldn't care less what happened to her. I don't really know if the book was that bad or I'm just exaggerating because I expected so much more from it. But the fact is it didn't manage to draw me in and I chucked it two-thirds of the way. Still enjoyed Gibson's writing style though and his particular way of creating sentences, and hope that he might redeem himself with another novel. I still want to read the third and last book in this trilogy called All Tomorrow's Parties eventually. Just not right now.

this book starts the bridge trilogy, is fast paced and a quick read. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to get started with reading Gibson.
