Following the two part Hyperion saga is a tall order, but Dan Simmons makes it look easy with his immaculately conceptualised far-future universe brimming with real and vivid characters with a variety of struggles and desires. The voyage of Aenea, while random and insufficiently explained, nevertheless makes for compelling reading, even moreso because of the enigmatic Shrike's behaviour and vague intentions. There were a few 'deus ex machina' moments such as the introduction of Nemes, but the frailty and imperfection of the eponymous Raul Endymion is the book's trump card. I am very much looking forward to the sequel.

These books were awesome, from Hyperion to The Rise of Endymion. Dan Simmons is an excelent writer.

I found this very hard to put down. It's lyrical and philosophical and fine hard SF at the same time, and I really want to know where it is going to end!
