Probably the most disappointing DK book I've ever read. Nothing happened in the 1st 2/3rds of the book and the ending sucked.

totally not relevant, but when I read the line where the old man looks at his clock and it is some odd hour of the morning, it is like 3:45 or something, well, I read that line at exactly that time in the morning. I swear.

This book is really great. A lot of Stories which run supposedly unattached at the beginning combine and finalize to a big and great ending. You have to read this !!

Koontz doesn't generally get into aliens. He makes people creepy enough in their own heads, so he doesn't need to. This was OK, in spite of the alien story line. Premise for the plot (poor, disabled cop has a movie producer's home willed to him up in the mountains, even though he doesn't know the producer from Adam) was a little thin, but his characters are always fun, extravagant, and quick with the cynical humor. It is what I like about him. Not his best or his worst.

It held my interest when I had nothing else to read, but I quickly abandoned it when I started reading something else.

Not Koontz's best. He waffles with the plot line, and it's almost like reading 3 different mediocre books that are all smushed together. The story begins promisingly with a classic action sequence, including lots of death, explosions and foreshadowing. In fact, the book does pretty well until Eduardo, the Montana ranch caretaker, is introduced. From here on everything gets predictable, bogged down in worthless, and at times excruciating detail. All of this results in a lot of build up for what turns out to be a pointless payoff. It almost seems as though Koontz wrote himself into a wall and just made up his final villain to circumnavigate it. He's done much better. Might I suggest Hideaway or Watchers?

Have read many horror / thriller books, this one is one the best I've read..You can live out his book as if watching a movie..

Really bad rip-off of "the invasion of body snatchers".Had to leave this book mid-way it's that bad.

I think this book would have been better just concerntrating on Eduardo and how he coped with the strange things on his ranch. I found it really interesting how the situation was described, with the lights and pressure, and the black doorway. I found it less interesting when the book turned to Jack and his family. I think I would rather have had the whole book set on Eduardo, and how he was trying to cope alone, and then possibly evenutally trusting the vet, and them trying to figure it all out together. I just feel, for me, the narrative would have played out better that way. Its not one of Koontz best books, and it will be going to the charity shop.
