After the lackluster 4th novel George R.R Martin returns with a great followup. The only complaint I have with this book is that even though its about 1000 pages nothing really happens until the last quarter of the novel. His first 3 novels in the series had precise plot pacing and it seems that these last 2 novels dont really know where its going. Its still an awesome book and now I have to wait till 2014 or 2015 to find out what happens.

Fan of the series but this book is garbage. Unnecessarily wordy and doesn't seem to go anywhere. You get the feeling that is was published before it was completed simply because of all the build up from the HBO series that premiered in May. The best thing this installment did was quell the urge to read more and since it will be a long while before the next book, that's probably a good thing. I'm glad I didn't pay for this drivel or it would've been that much worse. Get it at the library or on torrent and save yourself the pain of having dished out cash for it.

It seems to me like the odd numbered books in this series are the best ones. 1, 3 and this one. Loved it! I'm disappointed now that I'll have to wait forever for the next one.

Throughout the first 4 books, I started to wonder how the series will ever end. With this one I can now see the light at the end of the tunnel. Can't wait for the next one!

I'm a fast reader. I love big books. If it's good.

This book took me forever to finish, and it will likely become a paperweight than to be ever re-read.

Quite sad for such a splendid series.

Yay! Splendid fifth book in the series! Plus, having not read any of the books before summer vacation I didn't have to endure the 1/2 decade wait that occurred between books four and five. At page 600 a favorite character returns and by page 700 the almost full spectrum of characters were back (only one regular POV from books 1-4 didn't appear). Can't wait for the final two books! Hodor!

Book 5 of A Song of Ice and Fire. An upgrade over A Feast for Crows, merely because most of everyone's favorite characters get most of the stage time. If you missed Tyrion, Danaerys, and Jon in AFFC, you'll get plenty of them here.

There is a curious shift in Martin's storytelling, however. His first three volumes (two and three especially) were marked by a quick pace and lots of shocking plot twists. AFFC and this novel, however, have slowed down, and while there are some big developments, they take the entire book to emerge. Basically, though a lot is happening in this novel, not a lot happens. We end up only inches ahead of where we started. While I am a patient reader and don't need breakneck speed all the way through, Martin will have to pick up the pace a bit if he is to finish the series in two more books, as he intends.

People waited a looooooong time for A Dance with Dragons (6 years) the fifth book in the "Song of Ice and Fire" series...
...but overall, it was worth it!

This volume follows some of the most popular characters in the series, including Jon Stark, Tyrion and others, making it an enjoyable read. As usual, there are lots of characters and sub-plots to follow, as well as the return of some characters to center stage, but all this just makes for a more realistic world.

Two more volumes still to come - and far too many cliffhangers at the end of this book - mean that it will be difficult wait for the next in the series, The Winds of Winter.

WARNING: THIS REVIEWS CONTAINS SPOILERS...YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

George R.R. Martin offers a tour de force in his fifth book, the long anticipated A Dance With Dragons. Whereas I don't feel as if the wait could possibly live up to the hype, but Martin gives it his all and while not a sum of all its voluminous parts, this books serves up memorable moments for characters his fans truly adore.

And what moments: the fate of Jon Snow? Dany's comining into her own yet again as the true Queen (and it seems now a rider) of Dragons? Tyrion FINALLY rejoins the cast? Long lost, thought-dead-heirs-to-the-throne revealed? It's all here and all worth it! But for as much as the reader may be satisfied, we're again teased and cajoled and tortured by the potential for stories to come.

This book is rich in both its characters and atmosphere

I just recently bought all the books and read them. And this one is the worst of the series. I would be eaven more disappointed, if I had waited for 6 years as some loyal fans did. At times I just got the feeling, he is milking the cash cow now. I would not be suprised if the story would expand into more then 2 books yet to come, as "promised".

Still a good book, but I would suggest to borrow it from the library rather then buying a copy, if you are not an eager fan of the series.

Reads exactly what it is - a continuation of A Feast for Crows. Over half the book simply plays catch-up with what all those characters we never saw in the last novel have been doing all this time (Well, hello, Tyrion - where've you been all my life?), leaving little opportunity for true plot progression. Martin seems to be struggling under the weight of his own world-building, possibly because he's started to resort to fake-outs instead of actually killing characters off - which would perforce (at least mostly) end their subplots. Oh, I'm still reading, don't get me wrong...but I'm waiting for this epic to get epic again.

Enjoyed how the author answered a few lingering questions, but still managed to keep us hanging off the cliff. I was somewhat a little outraged by the turn of the events, but hopefully in the next book, it will serve its purpose. Let's hope sooner than six years this time.

Although I was surprised by a lot of the things that occurred in this book, it was much better than the previous book in the series. There were many surprises, plot twists, and shockers in this book. It also left many doors open for book 6. George R.R. Martin is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Without at doubt, this series has become one of my all-time favorites and I am anxiously awaiting the next book in the series and the 2nd season of Game of Thrones on HBO.

Nearly 70% through the last book released in the series. There are SO many plot lines going on! It's just as compelling as the others in the series, but reading this one on my Kindle instead of lugging the 1000-page book on my commute every morning has made it much more enjoyable.

George R.R. Martin takes years and years to write half of a book, and the ending of this book just makes you hate him all the more. I wish I'd never picked up this series!

The idea of splitting characters in two books was a total waste. It seems that books were already written, I am at loss to understand why would it take 6 years for a book to come out.

Overall the book as usual was good, it is very bold of Martin to kill his lead characters. However, the story seems quiet stretched now with inclusion of zillions of characters. often I would forget who is who and from which part of Westros.

I hope the next book will not take this long

I was excited when I read this but I slowly got anxious with all that's happening. I want to focus this review on Jon as Lord Commander, Daenerys as Queen of Meereen, and Arya continues her training in Braavos.

Jon has a lot of burden on his shoulders, he stopped being a boy, and started acting like Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. It was difficult to make decisions because the peace between the free folk and the men are fragile. With all that's happening I'm confused where this certain event took place.

Daenerys on the other side of Westeros is having the same problems. Her dragons are uncontrollable, she wants to make peace without bloodshed, and her decisions mustn't come from her heart. I like how sometimes she puts being Queen first, and the time where she gave up her attraction to a certain Daario and he became her lover. Her different facets were written - as a queen, as a child, and an attractive woman who wants to be desired and cherished.

Arya has moved up one step and with her determination she'll be a seasoned assassin.

I wasn't able to mention this in the previous review but I'd like to put it here since it's an ongoing theme for all the books:

Women are powerful. They could be whores or slaves or queens, but they make a man break his oath, and they do well to endure the hardships. They feed men, take care of babies, have a strong will. No matter the time setting, this subject is classic.

The only thing I don't care much about is the myriad names of knights and bannermen.

Going back to Dany, I was excited when she was able to ride Drogon, but that excitement became anxiety again because we won't see her until the last chapter = another cliffhanger.

Readers must pay attention to the author's note where he says the story progress isn't chronological but geographical. This isn't really a continuation from "Feast", but from "Storm". This lengthy novel manifests the difficulties in acquiring power, maintaining it, and playing the game of thrones - it all boils down to that.
