I found the first two Brian Herbert books (Harkonnen and Atreides) poor but enjoyable. The more I read the worse they got. I found Corrino to be a pretty awful book, with many inconsistencies with the original Frank Herbert books, and generally very poorly written. I would avoid these books if you want to continue to think about the Dune universe without cringing.

The conclusion of the triology of the pre-Dune story. Easy reading and lots of development, but the end was a bit boring with the wrapup of alle the threads. Yes, Jessicas baby was a boy (Paul) and he survived, Leto survived to, the Amal-project never succeded (until a couple of thousand years later). But still nice to know what prompted the start of Dune.Read it if you are a fan of Dune and want to know more, but do not expect the great writing and depth of Frank Herbert.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of Frank Herbert's Dune was his willingness to leave some questions unanswered and parts of his universe shrouded in mystery. Unfortunately, Jr. and Kevin can't resist the temptation to add details and background through these prequels to the detriment of anyone who would hope to lose themselves in the original Dune series. Furthermore, nothing is really illustrated or left to ponder about these characters; the authors choose to pound the reader in the face with a list of events and traits poorly described as prose. They have little of the finesse of Frank Herbert and sort of end up ruining the feeling of being engulfed in the smallness and vastness of the Dune universe that Sr. did so well to create as a vehicle for exploring the questions he raised about the evolution of humanity and our relationship to our surroundings. The prequels really seem like a much too long fan-fiction, which in the end creates more holes than it tries to patch.

Can't we get a restraining order or something to prevent Brian Herbert from publishing books? A full public apology should also be in order. His transgressions against one of the greatest writers (sci-fi or otherwise) of all time is basically unforgivable.

Needless to say, anything that has the word Dune and Brian on the cover should be avoided like a leaper with the plague on the sex offender registry.

These are, of course, horrifically bad. I read them one Christmas break when I was stuck in a house in the middle of Missouri with nothing to do but read these or watch ER. Last time I forgot to take a book with me to that house!
