Interesting commentary to life but nothing exceptional about the story
starkly told to be an everyman allegory

I performed this play three times but I've read it at least a dozen more, and as I get older the meaning becomes drastically different.

It was a beautiful little play, although i think you have to be in the right nostalgic mood to "enjoy" it. The pacing was just right and the overall simplicity was quite effective. It was clear that Wilder was telling his audience to live every moment and to keep theirs eyes open as they pass through life. I appreciated the directness with which he presented this notion. I also like the innovative staging and the unique narrator role.

Everyone should read this play. I have very fond memories of watching this play being performed by Alan Alda, Robert Sean Leonard and others in London in 1991 or 1992, not sure of the date. Fabulous.

Beautifully written, way ahead of its time and yet immediately relatable, with a concluding act that moves and heals. Great companion to Spoon River Anthology.

I read this for a project for my acting class...and i absoutely loved it. It's beautiful, and so complex and deep yet in its simplicity. It's ahead of its time and a tribute not only to life itself...but to LIVING life. Really, really living our lives. The view of a small town where no one looks beyond the horizon shows us how so many people lives their precious lives. Even the act of no scenery and no props show is all an allegory it seems, to these people's lives and the way they live them-simple, bland, and plain. This play was too amazing for words. And the ending...it made me cry so hard. This just might be the great American play. Right up there with the likes of Its a Wonderful Life becuase like the classic film, it shows us how precious the gift of life is and how we should cling to, behold, and be in awe of it, and most importantly...live it. A standing ovation.

A rather boring little play to read if you're feeling nostalgic or if you're forced to. I think it's a rudimentary analysis of the natural cycles and stages of life, of the transience of human existence. Perhaps the best part is that it was one of the first plays to really rethink theater, breaking down the fourth wall several times throughout. I read it about a year and a half ago, and I must say I've struggle not to forget about it entirely. It has had no impact whatsoever on my life or my viewpoints. Overall, kind of quaint, totally unimportant.

I have taught this play to high school students for over 10 years. It's difficult to see through the simple and straight-forward structure of this story. I try to remind my students that it is *deceptively simple.* Wilder tries to show the universality of all things. That we are all connected (small humans that we are) to something much much larger. He shows the cyclical nature of life and how often we miss the small details in life--which happen to be (most often) the most important details.

There's something so monumental about this play. The play is experimental and abstract although it is submissively in a chronicle order. This is also the one that took a first step to attempt to interact with the audience, although the anticipated effect is doubtingly admirable.

At first, Our Town became a favourite because one of the characters, Emily, was played by an actress I absolutely adore. Now it is a favourite because it is such a touching representation of daily life and regular people, with the strength of the characters lying in the fact that they can be anyone at any given time or place.

A classic, this was a re-read for me, although I hardly remembered it. The narration form the stage manager was the most interesting part for me. The story seemed predictable, though the existentialism shown at the end seemed to detour from theme of the play. It almost was like a slap in the face to the way of life these people embraced. As if the author was mocking their simplicity.

Just finished reading Thorton Wilder's "Our Town." Haunted by a detail at the very end: The curtains close at a world where a sense of eternity is permeating in the air, and when the curtains open again soon afterwards, what's revealed is an empty, barren stage. I am shocked and lost. Where's the eternity? Is this what life is REALLY about, that everything will just end up being nothing? But then I'm stuck on that idea: a sense of eternity SOMEWHERE. People will die, towns will change, but SOMETHING is preserved. And that something, whether it's a positive attitude towards life or dedication to the when and the where you live in, is perpetual.

Interestingly, earlier today I was reading about John Updike in a "New York Times" article, in which a young Updike is also quoted discussing the power of "the present" with his parents. It seemed to him almost an obligation for anyone conscientious to sniff out the sense of eternity from that ever enjoyable present. To end with his quote:

"We do not need men like Proust and Joyce; men like this are a luxury, an added fillip that an abundant culture can produce only after the more basic literary need has been filled. This age needs rather men like Shakespeare, or Milton, or Pope; men who are filled with the strength of their cultures and do not transcend the limits of their age, but, working the times, bring what is peculiar to the moment to glory. We need great artists who are willing to accept restrictions, and who love their environments with such vitality that they can produce an epic out of the Protestant ethic."

-- John Updike, letter to parents, 1951 (He was only 19!!!)
