The first book in the Harry Potter series and its a starting point of understanding Harry, his struggles and most importantly the first encounter we have with Tom Riddle (He-who- must - not- be - named) Its a great book and one which makes you want to continue to get the next book. However, the later books are much more effective and more darker which i like not to mention the range of other characters who we come to like/dislike.

It's embarassing to admit that there are few authors that I just plain like, except J K Rowling. I find Tolkien excellent at world-building and plot, yet his prose is dry, for example. Douglas Adams writes beautiful prose, but his plots are crap. JK however, does everything: character, dialogue, plot.. well. Alright, the end of the series loses its steam, but that doesn't stop the first few books being excellent, truly excellent reads.

I might've expected too much when I started reading the Harry Potter series, but this book just didn't do it for me.
I like the univers J.K. Rowling created and that is why I gave it 3 stars, but I'm not sure I'll be able to get through the rest of her books if her writing has not improved since she wrote the Philosopher's Stone.
However I must admit I enjoyed the book (although not as much as I had hoped). It's an easy read and I found the humour quite funny.

I love the entire Harry Potter series but I will always remember the first one that introduced me to the Hogwarts world. I began reading Harry before all the hype, before the publicity, definately before the movies. When my mom first handed me the book I thought it was going to be stupid. I'm pretty sure I gave her a sassy preteen you've-got-to-be-kidding-me look. Several hours later I was asking if the second book was out/ if we could go buy it. I love JK's writing style. That is something that never comes across in the movies. That humor that comes with her way of forming a scene. I will always remember Dumbledore unsticking those two sherbert lemons.

I opened this book many years ago, thinking it was a children's book. Once I started reading I could not stop. This entire series is an incredible work of literature. To those who scoff that it's a silly book about magic and wizards, a pox on you for your narrow-minded ignorance and idiocy! Take away the magic and the wizards, and you have an epic tale about friendship, loyalty, courage, and integrity. I hope it will be required reading for all someday.
You open the book, read a few lines, and whoosh! You are sucked right into the wizarding world, and you never want to leave.

Reading this book allows people of all ages to go back to their childhood and be a kid again.

The book introduces the reader to the infamous Harry Potter, a boy who discovers he has magical powers, and begins the journey of discovering his true family history and why he has been led to believe that he is just an ordinary boy.

HP and the Sorceror's Stone takes the reader on a fantastic journey into learning about the wizarding world and Harry's adventures at Hogwarts, the School of Witchcraft & Wizardry where he learns to use his magic to become a wizard.

I've read this book numerous times because it is so much fun to think like a kid and imagine the wonders of the wizarding world. The characters are absolutely alive.

I can't even begin to put into words the utter BRILLIANCE of the entire HARRY POTTER SERIES. Simply the best stories ever written to date and I'm sure not to find another as wrought with emotion and excitement and a truly powerful story of Love, Friends and Good triumphing over Evil in my life time -This series defines perfection!

I had started reading Harry Potter twice before and had just not been ready for it. Then I visited Edinburgh, Scotland and I started reading it again while I was there. This time it was the real British version and this time I did not set it down except for a couple of cups of tea. Magical and captivating, I became a quick fan of her prose and story-weaving. Only someone who has read all 7 of the books can see the true genius of this novel.

Ahhh....the book that started J.K. Rowling's career and my love of Hogwarts. However did she come up with such a plot is beyond my wildest imagination, but she has accomplished what she meant to do. I loved this book and it was also one of my favorites. You won't want to put it down!
Ahhh...this is the book that started it all! It began Rowling's career as a fantastic artist, and my love of Hogwarts. Even if there are no witches and wizards, her details drew me in until I actually imagined myself sitting with Harry and his crew! I loved it\<3

This book gets only 4 stars because it is the sad "American's are lame" version. However, it's really just as good as the original because mostly the changes are just stupid. This book (and the whole series) is a wonderful synthesis of originality and familiarity. JKR draws on the rich mythologies and folklores of the world, the well established 'boarding school adventure', and the good old epic battle against evil to tell a story with so much WONDERFULLNESS you can spend literally all your free time immersed in the series for years. I know, I have.

This book is a classic. No, it's not as long or complex as many of its sequels, but the story is fantastic and the introduction to the world/characters are a breath of fresh air. How so? Because Rowling refuses to take herself as seriously as most fantasy authors, instead poking sly fun at them when appropriate and taking the time to cater to more than one age group. I haven't finished the series yet; in fact, I've been wary about reading them for ages because of all the controversy. But I'm glad I finally gave this series a chance.

ookie this is the book that started it all for me,first book ive ever read. Can be a lil slow at the begining and untrained readers may even put it down, but once u get passed the first few chapeters no matter who you are...i dont thik you will want to put it down...wanting to know more n more. Its one of those fictions that has u guessing wether its fact (or maybe even hoping it is)....as for the characters,JK makes u love the characters she wants u to love and hate the characters she wants you to really well...very very well wriiten!!!

For youngesters, I'm sure its captivating, but I just wasn't able to get into the story with all of its easily solved dillemas, ridiculous diversions from the world Rowling had created (apparently giant trolls and adult wizards are REALLY easy to defeat, and brooms are REALLY easy to learn how to fly, but only for a select group of people) and Harry always being rewarded for doing the wrong thing. I know I'm getting too caught up in the little things here. It was at times imaginative, but I thought it was too childish for me.

What can I say, it's Harry Potter! This was my third HP book because I started in the middle with the Prisoner of Azkaban and so I'm biased and I think PoA is actually the best book of the series. However, this is where it all started. Very childish and easily mistaken for a kid's series. Was this intentional? As Harry grows, so does Ms Rowling's way of writting? Who knows, but a must read to understand the rest of the series. Try reading this after reading the entire series, so many clues, so many clues! ;-)
Very good, although very kiddy. The tone is completely different to the later books. Perhaps Ms Rowling narrated the story this way to break into the market...

After finishing book 7, I decided to go back and reread the series again from the beginning. It's been years since I read the early ones, so this will be fun. After reading all of the later books, Sorcerer's Stone seems so much shorter, lighter, and simpler, although it is certainly no less imaginative and entertaining. This is the book that got us all hooked, where we first fell for that scrawny, messy-haired boy with the lightning scar on his forehead. I remember the first time I rooted for Harry as he made his first real friends and found out he was more than he ever thought he was. I look forward to watching him grow up all over again.

With the first book in the series, this one is so much visibly smaller, yet hold a great deal of significance. The plot is set, characters are introduced, and the story just takes you away on a broom to the other world. Fantasy, fiction, and adventure; the book everyone will have read by the end of their lives!

The first in the Harry Potter series, Sorcerer's stone is aimed directly at pre-teen readers and offers little for mature adults. The upside of this book, though, is that once you get through the whole series, it's so much fun to go back to the beginning and explore the richness that was hidden there before you knew what to look for.

What can be said that others haven't? A terrific introduction to an enthralling book series with a lot of humor and fun, plus characters you can relate to.

I think the greatest compliment that can be paid to the book is that it FEELS real, that this could actually happen and not seem totally out of place. Such is Harry Potter, it's a favorite, it's a classic, you'll enjoy it.
