The book had more about the fair then I thought it would. I was more interested in hear about the murders than the history. So, three quarters of the way into the book I was slightly disappointed. That was erased with the last chapter on Holmes. All in all I found the book fascinating and I am ready to visit Chicago.

This is a non-fiction book, but you would never know that if you didn't read about it. The characters are rich and well detailed. Some of it seems to go beyond belief, but it's all true! The Chicago World's Fair of 1893 is the back drop, and the sly workings of a murderer are threaded throughout. If it was just fiction, I would say the character of the murderer was a bit over the top. But it's all true! A great read. Keeps you drawn to it thought.

Interesting premise, but moved SO SLOW. I had a really hard time getting through it. Read wiki synopsis instead.

This was an absolutely engrossing book and certainly one of the best stories I've ever read. It would have been amazing as fiction. To know that it's true is even more astounding.

if you like historical fiction, esp based in the US around turn of the century, I definitely recommend this book!

I learned so much about the late 19th cent., how dangerous it was, all sorts of little details on how working-class people lived, and how often and easily they died. Also great for explaining tech. at the time, the difficulties of putting on a world's fair, with electricity, etc. invention of the ferris wheel is in there- and then the sociopathic mass murderer, and his house of horrors was, of course, interesting too.
