I never find sequels better than the first, and this one surprised me because it was just as good! One of the few non-trashy 'This is my life" diary style teen books out there. Forget full-frontal noggings and apple pie froggins or whatever the heck that thing called a "book" is called. This, young ladies, is where it's at

Jessica's attitude and aptitude is still interesting, as is her developing relationship with Marcus Flutie. Another witty teen novel.

Reviewed by Amanda Dissinger for TeensReadToo.com

In SLOPPY FIRSTS, Jessica Darling dealt with adjusting to life without her best friend, Hope, having feelings for the school rebel, Marcus, and finding who she really is as a person. You know, typical teenager stuff.

In the sequel to SLOPPY FIRSTS, SECOND HELPINGS, Jess finds herself dealing with even more problems as she starts her senior year of high school. After spending the summer at SPECIAL, a summer writing camp for (you guessed it) special high school students, Jess decides that she wants to 1). become a writer and 2). attend the prestigious Columbia University in New York City.

The only problem is that she now has the tough job of convincing her parents.

With Len Levy, her brilliant competition for Valedictorian, crushing on her, and her determination to get over Marcus with only the help of her blonde Barbie doll neighbor, Bridget, Jess gets more than she bargains for as she struggles to plan her future and rediscover her past.

In my opinion, SECOND HELPINGS is even better than the terrific prequel SLOPPY FIRSTS. Through her shocking and entertaining observations about everything from her high school peers to "hot" writing instructors, readers identify with Jess's plights as she tries to reach her dream of getting out of New Jersey suburbia. Another touching book, another realistic story, another fantastic read from Megan McCafferty.

I wouldn't consider this a sequel so much as part two of a two-part series. It ties up the things that were unresolved at the end of the first book. Unlike the first book, this one makes me almost not want to read the next book, because I'd prefer to believe everything's going to work out for Jessica once she goes off to college. I think I laughed out loud more reading this book than the first one. Great writing!

Well these books are cute for a light read. I don't know why but I always feel guilty for reading books that are mainly centered around high school. I guess it is because I am almost thirty. But it is still funny and really true to a typical American teen.

 Sequel to Sloppy Firsts.

We rejoin hyperobservant Jessica Darling during the summer before her senior year. She is attending an academic enrichment camp where she meets Samuel MacDougall, a writing teacher who challenges her to take her writing to the next level. She runs into Paul Parlipiano, who she had a major cruh on, even after she learned he was gay. He attends Columbia University and gives her a tour that convinces her that it is the school for her. During senior year, she still misses her best friend, Hope, as well as Marcus, who broke her heart the previous year. SHe considers losing her virginity with Len Levy and becomes a subject of the school's anonymously published gossip rag.

The second hilarious installment in the Jessica Darling series. I can't put these books down. It's not a work of literary brilliance, but McCafferty has this way of making her characters so real, it really grips you to the story, and makes you wonder how things are going to turn out for all of them. I can't wait to read the other two.
