And it all comes to a head here. Will Frodo and Sam make it? Will the forces of good be crushed under the might of Sauron and the Ringwraiths? It's a little overwhelming for the readers, but Tolkien sets it up in a grand fashion and then doesn't just let the readers down gently as some other authors predictably would. It's a long ways from the hobbit-hole where Frodo and Bilbo begin the story with the One Ring.
