Tremendous hubris, reheated academic theory (Anderson's Imagined Communities) and few substantive ideas on developing this nation.

I have read three of his previous books a few years ago but nothing since he has become involved in Canadian politics. In the introduction to the book he covers the basis of his reasons to become involved in politics. I took away two main ideas from this section. It is our job as citizens to imagine the country we want to have. The second is that true political leadership is empathizing with all citizens. Not necessarily agreeing with them on everything but making an attempt at understanding their perspective. These seem simple and straightforward goals but we haven't seen them in this country in a while.

I really liked the first chapter wherein he eloquently and beautifully described his vision of what Canada was, is and should be. The rest of the book was mediocre.

A very interesting read! This book is proof of Michael Ignatieff's true love of this country. Those who would think he is "just visiting" or that "he'll just head back to Harvard" are proven dead wrong by this book. A memoir of Ignatieff's mother's side of the family, showing their attachment to Canada. Greatly recommended!
