How many times can I say how good Stephen King is as a story teller taking one person with paranormal powers and letting the story take over? King's interests in the dysfunctional family dynamic and the faceless, evil government out to get you collide to great effect. HEARTS IN ATLANTIS is a touching love story and bittersweet coming of age elements are thrown in too. King is one of those rare writers who is better now than he was when he started to get famous. Made into a very good movie starring Anthony Hopkins, Hope Davis, David Morse and Anton Yelchin.

Touches a bit on side reels of the Dark Tower series. Several great interlinked stories between two covers.

a 4 out of 5 because there were two big lag points in this book. (The begining of the 2cd and 3rd section)

HOWEVER~ This is by far one of my favorite books for the first section! I loved it and would like to go back and read about bobby and carol gerber! A very rich story only stephen king has a way of expressing such strong hidden emotions in his characters, making them real and colorfull instead of the dull~ she cried because of.. or he cried when... sort of stuff.

I really like how he added characters from his dark tower series in here. that was really cool.

Guess what: Stephen King is not just the king of horor but an amazingly gifted storyteller. Hearts in Atlantis is in my opinion a book about young people finding their place in life, while learning the hard way that parents aren`t always supportive and that there is no such thing as "lots of time to waste - just because you are young". I got connected to the characters instantaneously. Probably a disappointment to gore and monster lovers but a phantastic read for everybody who seeks for a little more than just goose bombs potential in a book.

this is definitely in the top three or four of my favorites....i loved the connection between all the characters to just one girl; i loved realism of it and the sometimes suspension of belief, just the character development in here in general is just plain phenomenal; i love the fact that it ties in heavily with another book by the name of Lord of the Flies....basically, if i were an english or lanaguage arts teacher, and i had the freedom to create my own cirriculum, i would have my students read Lord of the Flies the first semester, then Hearts in Atlantis for the second sem.

Five interrelated stories which together are essentually about screwed up people trying to deal with screwed up lives and situations - mainly the aftermath of Vietnam. Beautifully written, engrossing and surprisingly moving. Only marred by two small items - one is the unnecessary inclusion of references to King's dark tower series, which represents the only real supernatural component - the reference adds nothing to the stories, and actually distracts from the characters; and secondly, in the title stories, the tale centres around an obsession that rings untrue and somewhat ridiculous. Aside from these two flaws, a well executed story from the master, and among his best.

I have had this book on my shelf since it came out, but just read it last week. I was in the mood for a Stephen King book and haven't read one in years. I felt that his stories were all taking on a similar feel and predictability. I was an avid King reader in the late 80's and well into the 90's, which is when I picked up Heart of Atlantis. This book has reignited my love for Stephen King. Definitely not the typical horror story that I was actually looking for (I refuse to read dust covers before reading the book), but this was a very pleasant surprise. I agree with another review of wanting to read more about Bobby and Carol. I loved the character of Carol Gerber. I think any woman who experienced high school and college can relate to that character.

this book is interesting dark and disturbing with a nostalgic bend of passing decades and small town life, which is typical of Mr. King. Instead of physical violence this book is more about emotional and mental violence. The thing i enjoyed the most about this book was how often he got period details in perfect description. The first part of the book the most dynamic and interesting part of the book is the blueprint for the other chapters/stories as all the major characters throughout the book are introduced in the first story. I also liked that through the rest of the book no one lives happily ever after and some characters tales are not told directly by themselves it is told by a side character who will have no bearing on the rest of the book. it's even how inventive how he ties "The Dark Tower" book series without this being a dark tower book, but unfortunately it starts out great then the chapter on the card game of hearts goes on forever. It's the longest story in the book.

The story is well told, yet the book lackes coherence, which is annoying. The novel consists of five novelettes that are loosely connected through reappearing personae. Yet for me there remained too many unanswered questions to really enjoy the read. The appearence of a not-of-this-world-horror in the first novellette is either utterly unecessary or would have needed much more elaboration than given. The last novellette is completely devoid of meaning and could as well just not be there.
As Stephen King definiteley knows how to write a cohehernt novel, I found the read diappointing, though the underlying topic is utterly interesting, because it is true man-made horror: the war in Vietnam. So well; interesting but disappointing.

This is a collection of Stephen King novellas all with a theme based around the vietnam war and featuring the same characters throughout. Undoubtedly the first novella is a best and is the only one that contains any real horror but all of the others are entertaining which each one being completely different. None of them are masterpieces by any stretch of the imagination but King has proven yet again that if you are looking for some easy entertainment then he is the man to provide it.

I'm not normaly one to choose the movie over the book, but god grief! Could this book have been more extensive and pointless! You get so wrapped up in the three main characters, then you read about other random people FOREVER! Everything beyond part 1 was completely unnecessary. Thumbs down for me.

Definitely one of my top King novels. If colleges were to require a King book in an english curriculum, this would probably be it. Its 40 year timespan and interweaving stories form not only a strong Dark Tower connection, but a great saga for the latter 20th century.

The very first part of this book dealing in 1960 with the character of "Ted" is really the only edge of your seat, page to page turner that can't be put down. Though there are parts in the other sections, especially with Peter Riley in 1966 that I can relate too, everything else was just sort of so-so filler material. King really let down after building the reader very high up with his fantastic first half of the book. Three stars (5 stars for the beginning 1960 part) as a whole is my review rating!

An excellent book, and one that is easily in my top three for Stephen King's work.

It's a collection of stories that interweaves through the lives of several characters and tells how events early in their lives affected everything that happened after. It flows easily from one story to the next, even though they are almost all told from a different character's point of view. However like most of King's work, it is the characters themselves that makes the stories come alive, and also in this particular case, the setting of the stories themselves.

For me it was a story of how some things can change the course of not just one life, but the lives of everyone that surrounds that person. It's about how sometimes in our lives there are places and times that we never really leave, and that leave an imprint on our souls. It is a story that I know I will end up reading again and again.

Favorite quotes/passages:

..."The Simak book id a great story", he said. "not such great writing, though. Not bad, I don't mean to say that, but take it from me, there are better."
Bobby waited.
"There are also books full of great writing that don't have very good stories. Read sometimes for the story, Bobby. Don't be like the book-snobs who won't do that. Read sometimes for the words--the language. Don't be like the play-it-safers that won't so that. But when you find a book that has both a good story and good words, treasure that book."

Dearie looked at Skip, also mute. Then he looked at me. His face was expressionless, almost dead, but I wished I had for once forgone the smartass impulse. The trouble is, for the born smartass, the impulse has nine times out of ten been acted upon before the brain can even engage first gear...

I started on my way, nettled in spite of my nine bucks. Us class clowns aren't wild about making friends--two or three are apt to do us for a lifetime--but we don't react very well to the bum's rush, either. Our goal is vast numbers of acquaintances whom we can leave laughing.

...Anything that has the power to make you laugh over thirty years later isn't a waste of time. I think something like that is very close to immortality.

..."Hearts are tough, Pete. Most times they don't break. Most times they only bend."

...It had been in their hands then; he was quite sure of it. But kids lose everything, kids have slippery fingers and holes in their pockets and they lose everything.
