Hmmm, difficult to assess. It's written so 'Clive Cussler' you keep expecting Kurt Austin to act like Dirk Pitt, but he's not. Typically, it's written well and has good flow, so it's worth a read. Will I try Kurt Austin again? Probably.

Like all of Cussler's novel this one mixes action and adventure of modern characters with historical artifacts. Though all his underwater/marine lingo is lost on my and I sometimes skip ahead through paragraphs of detailed writing I find the stories and characters enjoyable and thus keep reading. In this one Cussler introduces someone else from NUMA, Kurt Austin and his friends. Like Cussler's Pitt character, Austin is supposedly good looking, smart and likes adventure. But like Pitt's character Austin is the most enjoyable when you see him interacting with those around him. Over all a good story with good characters.

It finished but is the first time that I've read a Cussler book and felt dissapointed.
So far is a good book but I don't believe is one of Cussler's finest books. It is too slow for his style. Tis start to wrm up at about 200 pages when usually his books hit the gas from the beginning.

Another great Cussler book, this one the first to focus on Kurt Austin rather than Dirk Pitt. The plot involves Christopher Columbus, the Mayans and a maniac out to form a new state consisting of Mexico and the Southern US states. Another great Cussler novel.

With Kemprecos as co-writer you have to wade through some purple prose to get to the action, but as usual the action abounds, the adventures are unbelievable, and you'll be surprised that you stayed up until 2:00 a.m. -- again -- to finish this.

I read this book right after having finished Atlantis Found, just by happenstance or dumb luck. Both are Cussler novels, though Serpent adds a new author to the scene, Paul Kemprecos.

There are so many common themes, it was almost to me if Mr. Cussler was telling the same story with a different set of heroes and villains. The idea of having additional NUMA teams with their own adventures is a good one, but this cast simply did not compel the way Dirk does, and they were certainly less entertaining.

The book was painfully long at times, and I was also disappointed with the ending. It all seemed to be rushed and fall apart late - as if there were a 500 page limit and only 20 pages to wrap up the book. It is an entertaining read if you have nothing else around, but I only give it 2 out 5 stars.
