(Based on the original French book).While writing a University Paper on Pagan Identity in Late Antique Egypt I stumbled upon the novel by Christian Jacq. It took me some time to find it in Paris since it's no longer being printed in its pocket edition. But once I found it in a Used Books shop near Notre-Dame it took me two days to read this novel and enjoy it immensely! The tragic downfall of the Temple of Philae, probably the last official Pagan temple to survive Christian fanaticism, is beautifully described through the timeless characters Jacq portrays. A sense of anger and despair will take hold of the reader while he witnesses abuse, religious hatred and Christian folly aimed at demolishing the glorious twilight of Egyptian civilization. However, in funerary and monumental art the spirit of Egyptian belief will endure! This is the promise of Philae!
