I thought this book was fantastic. I've never read a lot of Stephen King before but boy can he tell a story. Compared to the current trend of writing ever-twisting thriller/chase novels that require an intricate knowledge of some aspect of society this was a good old-fashioned tale told with a refreshing simplicity that still managed to capture the scene (1930s America) and imagination in spades.

I can see myself reading this again in time (or going on about how amazing it is in conversations about books we've read).

A very compelling book that I just didn't want to put down. There never seemed to be a dull moment even when the topic might have seemed to be mundane. The story moved itself seamlessly and I would consider it to be one of the authors best works. The characters' and descriptions were lush and in depth making it possible for them to leap off the page and into you're own life. Most people don't believe in magic or miracles, this book makes you think twice.

Is John Coffey blessed with his Gift. No. He dies because he had the ability to absorb the pain and suffering from others. He transfers some of this amazing gift to Paul Edgecombe and Jingles but it does them no good. They are granted eternal life, as a punishment (maybe) for killing one of God's finest creatures.
Strange that Stephen King could write such a beautiful haunting tale of condemned prisoners on the Death Row with such heartfelt compassion. The movie is equally good

My first Stephen King experience, and what a great one it was! I will certainly be reading more of his work. The Green Mile is a gripping read and King takes you on an epic journey, into the experiences of being on the Last Mile. This story was intense in places, and King draws the reader right into the story. I highly recommend this to anyone who appreciates "getting a buzz" from reading.

King astounds me...goes for years writing formulaic stuff, then comes up with this...don't get me wrong his first few hits blew me away, up until Cujo, then nothing for a long time. I tried so hard to like his recent Duma Beach. It got so close to great. This one, The Green Mile, didn't even have to try. And there are other gems among the pulp, but my addled aged brain can't bring them to mind at the moment. An author to be respected both for copious output and occasional heights of true literature.

Stephen King is a true genious. He can write about anything and has done so. Some books you know are his and some you wouldn't think of as Stephen King are his, too. This is one you wouldn't think would come from him. Loved it. Bought it when it came out in 6 parts as a serial series!
Loved this book. When it was first published, it came out in six installments, and I started buying when the second came out, so I had two parts to read. It was a long month to wait for the next part of the book. King puts a lot of detail into the characters setting of the story. In this one, the horror that you feel is in the acts that man commits against man. I felt the guards' pain when they had to put John Coffey in the electric chair.

I have read this book but I didn't like the story line much. I watched the movie too. I will give it credit for being an eye-opener for everyone. Those who don't quite understand how African-Americans were treated regardless of what their intelligence level, or social status was - should read it. It will make you think, be touched, feel anger, and sadness all in the same story.
This book explains a true story, I have also seen the movie. It is about an innocent Black Man with special needs who gets accused of murdering a little girl. The book, as well as the movie is so heart wrenching and emotionally gripping on one's mind and heart. A must read if you want to understand how racism was so profoundly popular and it can make a person so mad at how people were treated just because of their skin color.

Stephen King has undoubtedly proven over the years that he is a master at subtle terror. But with The Green Mile serial he invokes a far deeper feeling. Yes, there are still elements of suspense and the supernatural does make its presence known, but it reaches far deeper than that. It is the story of two men. Two vastly different men whose lives intertwine and become connected.

Many people have seen the movie but only through reading the book can you fully understand what King is trying to communicate. That within the most fierce exteriors there lies sometimes the most gentle soul.

I really loved this book. I was glad that the movie script didn't defer away too much from the novel itself, so I was able to follow it very easily. The only thing I didn't like was that everything Stephen King uses metaphorically pertains to sex or something dirty. I used to think of him as a horror or sci-fi author, but now he's just kind of . . . gross, to me. None of that is ever really copied into movies, funnily enough. I guess that 'Green Mile' the movie wouldn't be the same serious, tear-jerker movie with all the sex and pervertedness that's in the book. Fantastic read, though. I loved how John Coffey's character was transferred so perfectly from the book--- from everything from his actions to his lines, John Coffey was the John Coffey I imagined. I really appreciated Elaine's character a lot more in the book than in the movie, which is usually the case when they go to screen. Elaine was quite a compassionate person, and protecting Paul like that at the nursing home was perfect.

Stephen King may be one of the popular writers of our time, but I have never actually sat down and read one of his books, till the Green Mile. His books never seemed to draw me, I'm no fan of the horror genre. But the Green Mile was a startling revelation. It was so good!! It drew me from start to finish and even took tears from me. It was a heartbreaking story of love, friendship, death and the human condition. "He killed them with their love for each other. That's how it is everyday, all over the world."

I wept for John Coffey, an innocent and good man forced to walk the green mile. It was honestly a book that changed me. And who knows, maybe I'll picking up another Stephen King book soon:)

The first Stephen King book I've read and I was pleasantly surprised. Obviously, I knew the story having seen the movie, but I didn't know what to expect in terms of style or substance from Stephen King. What I found was a very easy, conversational tone that avoided falling into the trap of dumbing-down.

The structure was good (perhaps due to the necessities of being written as a periodical), the plot was layered and despite the outrageous turn of events nothing was sensationalised.

I don't want to make out that The Green Mile is a masterpiece of literature comparable to Dickens or Tolstoy, but it is certainly in the highest class of modern fiction.

The most depressing book I've ever read, this story of compassion throws every rock at you. Its language startles and amazes me even after reading it several times over. Coffey, a convicted murderer and rapist with the ability for great magic and healing. Such opposite ends connected by a terrifying and horrific untruth.

One of Stephen King's best, you won't be able to put it down once you start, its conviction is true in meaning but cruel in its execution. Each character in this novel seems to reach out and touch you through the pages, their hearts and minds imprinted on it for lifetimes to come. Someday this book will be picked up and read, far into the future it will entertain readers even then, still connecting to our sense of belief in magic and the sympathetic thoughts still held like in Coffey's child-like being. Don't expect to feel joy and warmth from this novel, it is a horrific account of how mankind can be so cruel to each other.

Very interesting book as it has the by now familiar story about John Coffey, but it doubles as a sort of period piece about the 1930s and has a lot to say about the process of aging. We see the contrast between Paul in the 30s and Paul in the 90s, and we sort of get little bits and pieces of information as to why the two are the way they are.

I totally loved this book.It was one of the very few books I actually reread. This beautiful story revolves around the lives of a few prison guards working on Death Row during the 30s in America. One day, they chance upon John Coffey, who is charged for brutally murdering two little girls. The chief guard, Paul Edgecomb, and the rest of the crew find it difficult to believe that this gentle 6 foot giant, who is also has a mind of a child, is culpable of such a heinous crime. As they journey along, Edgecomb learns of the shattering truth about Coffey and this changes his life completely. This book has strong Christian themes, and that's probably one of the reasons I loved the book.A must read

Good book, probably one of his best. It was a little long winded at times, but I suppose that is part of King's charm.

I saw the movie first, and think that the movie stayed fairly true to the book, which is rare. If you haven't seen the movie (let's be honest, who hasn't?) -- this isn't your typical King story, it has very little to do with "horror", and more to do with fantasy, bordering on Science Fiction.

Storyteller Stephen King still has it. THE GREEN MILE jumps through time with his ripping yarn of a man with a special power and the people whose lives he touched in every sense of the word. The magic is much more in the telling than in the magic of the man. Made into a touching movie starring Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan, Bonnie Hunt, Sam Rockwell and James Cromwell.

Well i never thought a book by SK could bring me to tears, but this had me sobbing from halfway through. Couldnt get to the book shop quick enough to pick up the next installment.. Was a bit peeved when they re-released it as one whole book, but liked the idea of installments as it kept me wanting more.. Such a powerful story and great story telling in a way only he can tell it.. So different from the horror he writes so well and a great book.. The incredible journey he takes you on through the story.. the way the characters interact with each other whilst staying separate makes this a book that all should read.. I felt their pain and angst as i was reading it.. i loved some characters and absolutely hated others.. that's what makes this so worth the read.. to hate someone that doesnt exist and is just words on paper.. now thats writing

I think all readers have guilty pleasures. The books or authors that we read that we rarely, if ever, talk about. Stephen King is one of mine. He's not a great writer, and I have never thought of him as such, but he is an excellent storyteller. He brings characters and places to life in a way that makes them special, at least to me. Sometimes I think people forget that being a good writer and being a good storyteller are not always one and the same. Personally, I would much rather be one of the latter.

The Green Mile is one of my favorites of King's works. It's the story of normal people doing a job that few would want to deal with, and being touched by something bigger than they could possibly imagine. Like most of King's work, it has it's share of the supernatural and it's own kind of horror interwoven through the story. However this one is a favorite for me simply because that element takes a backseat for the most part to the characters themselves. It's a story, first and foremost, about people, and that makes the other elements all the more haunting.

Favorite quotes/passages:

A man's mouth gets him in more trouble than his pecker ever could, most of the time.

It's strange how pain marks our faces, and makes us look like family.

Writing is a special and rather terrifying form of remembrance, I've discovered-there is a totality to it that seems almost like rape. ... I believe that the combination of pencil and memory creates a kind of practical magic, and magic is dangerous.

Romance doesn't die when you pass into the strange country that lies beyond eighty, but you can forget that Gone with the Wing crap.

Love among the ruins. It probably sounds funny to some of you and grotesque to the rest of you, but I'll tell you something, my friend: weird love is better than no love at all.

Time takes it all, whether you want it to or not. Time takes it all, time bears it away, and in the end there is only darkness. Sometimes we find others in that darkness, and sometimes we lose them there again.
