This is not a review but rather a comment... I enjoyed Morris' book so much so that I found T.R. to become a topic of more serious study. But this book was more than historical; I found it inspiring in an extraordinary way. I want my kids to read it. I intend to read it again.

Well written account of the family background and early life of Theodore Roosevelt. Didn't hold my interest as strongly as other books by McCullough.

David McCullough's take on T.R. is very interesting. Not much about his childhood is widely known and McCullough takes careful time to reveal the familial background. Reading about the relationships he had with his siblings is endearing and also reading of the love he felt towards his parents is something i never knew. It's also fascinating that T.R. was a very sick child and then turned into one of the robust and lively presidents the U.S. has ever had. McCullough is always a joy to read, but as a historian it's also always a little odd not to see footnotes or much source documenting in the text. This book is excellent if you just want to get a picture of what Teddy Roosevelt's early life and career was like this book is perfect.

This is, perhaps, the best analysis of TR's life before the Presidency. The read comes away realizing that we just don't make Presidents like this anymore!

An encouraging, riveting, well-written survey of Roosevelt's life. Was Theo Roosevelt the greatest man's man, the greatest president, the greatest natural leader, that post civil war America has ever produced? I think so. This is all more encouraging against the backdrop of his personal (sickliness, death of first wife) and political(he faced the NY political machine with bravado) challenges.

Excellent! McCullough focuses on TR's early life and family as he shows the development of TR's character. A superb book that takes you back in time to a forgotten way of life. I highly recommend for anyone who wants to understand TR.

I became a major TR fan after having read this book. An amazing story about and amazing man.
This a great book that describes the early life of one of America's greatest presidents and certainly one of the most fascinating.
This is a very well written book. McCullough brings the young Theodore to life and shows him to be as fascinating as a child and young man as he was as a president. Even though he was from a "priviledged" family he was still very much a self-made man in both body and spirit. Truly one of the most interesting Presidents to date.

David McCullough is a writer whose voice I hear when I read him, and I love it. Here he's in favorite territory, he's a fan of his subject, (and so am I) so I'm happy to be along for the ride. We are indeed just that with T.R., his ebullient personality shines through the author's words with all of it's quirks, faults and frailties. I read this grinning like the Cheshire cat.

I enjoyed this book immensely for two reasons: 1. the author and 2. the content. David McCullough is an absolutely superb writer and historian. I am sure he could write a book on the drying and curing process of paint and it would still be fascinating. In this work, McCullough chronicles the early years of a man who I believe became one of our nation's greatest Presidents. TR had a privileged childhood. McCullough gives the details of the Roosevelt's year long tour in Europe, the family's trip down the Nile River, Theodore's hunting expeditions and ranching adventures out west, and his years as a student at Harvard. I also like that McCullough branches out as well to provide a context of the political landscape of New York City in Theodore's time. Intertwined with Roosevelt's story is a lot of history concerning the early years of the Republican party. Thoroughly enjoyed the book. Thumbs up!

Makes me realize what a great loss it was to have this author die so young. I've read most of his work but will look for the others. He brings history to life as few others.

You have to be a historian to like this book. It's tedious to get through. But I learned a lot. Teddy Roosevelt transforms from a sickly, asthmatic child to becoming a strong man.

David McCullough is proof positive that being a historian and a good storyteller are not mutually exclusive talents. History IS alive, and McCullough demostrates that in his tribute to TR. Rather than doing the expected and extolling all the great moments in the great man's life, he does everything but that, starting with his father and grandfather; illuminating the family and situation that made the man. TR's folks and family are so incredibly influential in how he turned out it's fascinating to see him develop into what seems an inevitable fate- President of the US. A thoroughly fascinating read and a great prelude to a biography of his Presidential years, I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys history and/or biographies....as well as anyone who appreciates McCullough's other work.

A good biography. Thorough, detailed, accurate. Horrible conclusion. The suspense of his life builds momentum, climaxing with his time in the Dakota Badlands, but then McCullough transitions into obituary mode for T.R. and his family, telling quick recaps of what happened in their life, and how they died. I felt hugely let down. I was expecting more political intrigue, but this didn't interest McCullough.

This is not a full biography of Theodore Roosevelt. It only covers his early years and does not extend to his presidency. But as far as it goes, it's more of the great stuff you would expect from McCullough. He brings the characters to life and makes you feel as though you're living their lives along with them, feeling what they feel, and seeing what they see.

I just love David McCullough. He has a way of taking me into a different time and place - not with facts and figures - with real people and their interations with others, their relationships. Reading his work I understand the individual he writes about by understanding what truly motivated him or her - people, time and place. Wonderful!! Very rich.

If you enjoy reading historical biographies, this is a must read. It is very intriguing and captured what Theodore's life was like. He did everything in life to live up to his father's (a humanitarian)name. Teddy exceeded his father's expectations...as President the asthmatic child who loved the outdoors, increased the national forests by some forty million acres, established five national parks, four national game refuges, fifty-one national bird sanctuaries, sixteen National monuments (including the Grand Canyon). He made conservation a popular cause. He had an amazing childhood and that grew into an extraordinary young man.
David McCullough is a master story teller.

This is a very moving and human account of TR's younger years, the years that made him the president we later knew. It gives great insight into the Roosevelt family, a classy upbringing if ever there was one.
They're a dying breed, the populist, philanthropic upper-class, which actually believed that the duty of the haves was to help the have-nots.
