My high school wanted to ban this book for containing the so called "N-word," but the students threw such a fit, and the school board members were so shocked that so many students had such a strong reaction to the book, they decided to read it for themselves. They decided to reverse their decision due to the fact that they loved it themselves!

While I'm such a book-worm I can't pick a favorite book, this makes the top four for sure!

this book occupied my favorite book slot for years and years. i started reading seriously as an adolescent, about fourth or fifth grade, and that was back in the late 80's, early 90's era when horror ruled, u could go to wal-mart or the drug store and take your pick of any number of scary novels, u had vampires and werewolves, u name it. i guess someone older than i would argue that the horror heyday extended more back into the 80's, and truth to tell the 90's is when all that legal thriller bullshit started up. anyway, robert mccammon was one of the better horror writers of the time, but u can't really classify this book as horror. it's a coming of age story, all about a boy and a murder and moonshiners and a monster in the woods and a voodoo priestess and a summer crush and a magic bike and winning against the bullies and even an old retired wild west gunslinger. this is an awesome book if you haven't read it.

one of the best book i have ever read. i is acoming of age story that includes a mystery, elements of magical realism, and the true meaning of family. there are some elements that remind me of faulkner amd some that remind me of a children's book. a definte read for anyone who likes a well written novel.

~A Boy's Life Is One Of Many Tales And Trials~ Robert McCammon's Boy's Life is one that should reach anyone and everyone. Whether through the many adventures that Cory, the boy, is taken or just through McCammon's artful story-telling everyone should be reached. Cory, a young kid growing up like you did or are doing, is just enjoying life until one day when his father witnesses a brutal murder. Now, Cory is still enjoying life but the whole rest of the book is wrapped with the murderous thought lurking in the background. Now do not be depressed either because the book is one of life, in general, its joys and its sorrows. On another note I thought the beginning was a bit slow; however, once you get into the book and "know" Cory you should find it a very entertaining tale, all about that magical time called childhood.  How much is magic? and how much is just a childs imagination? In the Early 60's a delivery man witnesses a horrible crime, and almost dies trying to save a drowning man. The fallout from this action plays out in the background as the man's young son is enjoying his childhood. Most of the scenes in this book are from the young boys viewpoint. And what seems like magic, or supernatural events, may just be how the young boy is processing the events around him. A dark coming of age novel that rivals "The Body" by S. King.

It's a cold spring morning in 1964, while Cory MacKenson and his father are finishing up Dad's milk delivery route. From out of nowhere a car drives past them and dives into Saxon's Lake. Cory's dad jumps in to save the driver, but he's already dead - murdered. Car and driver sink into the bottomless depths of the lake, leaving a mystery that haunts Cory and his dad.A story of a boy growing up, only the way a boy with a huge imagination would remember it happening. Life with more supernatural, mysterious, and exciting events than any adult would imagine. Entertaining and thought provoking. It's a weird mix of Spielberg and King.

This is my favorite book of all time. The characters here are not simply characters. They are people. McCammon has made it so that all the characters are fleshed out. They have a story, and though we don't get to hear all of it (except for perhaps the main character) they feel real. This kind of connection is only enforced by the larger-than-life events that happen as well as the ordinary ones. This is a book that is truly about life, and it as interesting as life itself. Boy's Life is not a book; it's an experience.

While I have several 'favorite' books - this is one of a kind in the sense that I can sit down and read it straight through over and over and over again, and each time take something new from having done so.

McCammon does a terriffic job of recapturing the magic and innocence of childhood for his readers, while still keeping the plot line and social intricacies suitable for adults.
