***SPOILER ALERT***"Fabrizio's Return" by Mark Frutkin is a historic novel that looks at the life of a priest, healer, painter, astrologer and would be saint Fabrizio Cambiati. Cambiati himself says throughout his life that he is no saint but after his death the town led by his former lover push to have him nominated for Sainthood. A high ranking official of the church - the devils advocate comes to the town to try and uncover any dirt on the saint but falls for both his story and in love with his great-graddaughter. Cambiati is denied sainthood not for his indescretions but for his Jewish blood. The novel makes you consider the state of goodness and moratlity and decide if they are the same instead completmentary. Cambiati was certainly a fine man who cared for the people in his town, saved many lives and gave many people fine advice. On the other hand he and the duchess had a sexual encounter. Is anyone perfect, is anyone truly moral and good. I think it takes mistakes of your own to make you sympathetic to the problems and misfortunes of others. This is an excellent read that I would recommend for anyone. It explores the history and hypocracy of the church. It explores the ideas about astronomy, astrology, and alchemy espoused by scholars in during the renaisance. Particularly entertaining is the work of the devil's advocate and his role as the tabloid journalist of the time.

This is such a good book. Interweaving three timelines, it tells the stories of two men of the cloth and paints a rich tapestry of the lives of those who touch them. Part drama, part fantasy, part love story, it is a wonderful read.
