I HAVE READ THIS SEVERAL TIMES AS IT IS A TRUE STORY (STORY MAKES IT SOUND TRITE)! IT MAKES YOU REALISE HOW FRAGILE LIFE IS AND HOW EVIL PEOPLE ARE.

I think I heard about this book via a newspaper book review and the subject of wartime France caught my eye. I found I enjoyed the first half of the book, which focused on the intensity of evacuating soon to be occupied Paris, more than the second part. The second half left me longing, for what I'm not sure . . . I know the scope and scale of this book is not what the author intended due to her early demise in a concentration camp, but the last part just didn't leave me fulfilled from a character or story perspective.

This is a gorgeous book about people caught up in the futility that is war. The greatest tragedy is that Nemirovsky was murdered in the concentration camps before she finished it.

Beautiful, lyrical descriptions of places. The people are portrayed for the most part as shallow, except the Michauds [sic?] and they are the ones who suffer the most hardships continuously. The author's death at the hands of the nazis denied the world of a great literary talent. Read the appendix for the author's notes on the book and correspondence pertaining to before/after she was arrested by the nazis.

Ein brillantes Buch über die Zeit der deutschen Besatzung in Frankreich. Beklemmend ist aber nicht nur das Buch selbst, sondern auch dessen Entstehungsgeschichte und das damit verknüpfte Schicksal der Autorin.

Read this with a knot in my stomach. Despite being a novel it reads almost like reportage. We know how the story turns out but Nemirovsky never found out. For her France remains occupied, the Germans the victors. This is the reality of occupation in Europe, it is amazing that such a recent history seems so far behind us now.

A beautiful look into how the German occupation of France affected people in the city and the country, a perspective of war that I've never read before and thus found very interesting. Beautifully written snapshots of the victims of war (including 'the enemy'), without victimizing them. All the more touching and sad knowing the fate of the author.

The book becomes all the more poignant when you read the appendix...the story of Iren Nemirovsky herself. Wow.....

Such a hauntingly beautiful story. I only wish Nemirovsky had lived to finish it. It doesn't read as incomplete, but she could have penned a modern "Les Miserable" if given the chance.
