The first vignette was good but the rest were not very compelling. One of the few books I considered not finishing. I love East Indian culture, I was excited about this book, then very dissapointed.

A delectable series of short stories, that aren't too short- the narrative is fleshed out just long enough to engage the reader. A couple of times, I's able to guess (correctly) what would happen next. That said, I's also "blind-sided" by an unexpected twist in one tale. Overall, I preferred Part One to Part Two, despite the fact that the most touching story (in my opinion) is in Part Two. The "random" images on the cover finally made sense! I'm definitely buying a copy for my permanent collection!

Jhumpa Lahiri's strong point is writing short stories. Each touching tale leaves you satisfied but yearning for the next. A great read if you've been waiting for something similar to "Interpreter of the Maladies"
