Just finished The Inferno, and don't want to go there! If anyone needs a reason (or a hundred) to lead a good life, just read this! John Ciardi's translation was so helpful--the introduction to each Canto and the notes explain everything in detail. Starting The Purgatorio today--more later.

Ciardi does a wonderful job with the translation and also in providing all the cross-references needed to understand Dante's allusions. This, unfortunately, is also the major flaw of the Comedy. Dante, in parts, relies very heavily on references to characters, both from other works, and people from his own time. While ancient myths are something often referenced in literature and a topic many people have at least a little knowledge of, history of Dante's time is much less known. This makes the Comedy difficult to understand and very frustrating at times, as one is forced to constantly flip between the text and footnotes. And yet, I will almost certainly return in the future to attempt better absorption of the base material, in what is still a well thought out and beautifully written poem.

If it wern't for the comentary by the translator I would have missed a lot. Sometimes, I wished I had a better understanding of Greek mythology and astrology. Reading this really showed me that you have to understand the history and culture of the writter in order to get the most out of it. Wish I had someone to talk to who had read it while I was reading it. Great book!
