The autobiographical account of this woman, masked under a male pen name, reveals a fierce intellect matched by an even more impressive bravery. Her prose, while strong, does not compare to her mind or courage.

i felt like i was in Africa, but no...I was in cold Baltimore but it felt real. She wrote beautifully about the coffee farm she owned in the early 1900's in Kenya. This was the book that inspired Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea". READ IT !

Karen Blixen is a delight to read. She has beautifully written about her time in Kenya and a way of life has since disappeared.

Chloe Dee has reviewed the book Out of Africa. Out of Africa is one of my favorite movies which I have and watch over and over again. So I was a bit surprised when I read the book which I got from Braille Books at the Library of Congress for the blind and visually impaired. The movie, in my opinion is nothing like the book but I like them both. The book is a journal of the author's real life experiences in Africa, her community work as well as her farm work. The various relationships she had there were interesting and were directed mostly by the political energy of the day. The book seems to go off in different directions and was a bit scattered but so is real life, isn't it? I enjoyed the book and there are parts of it that I would like to read again. If you have a blind friend please encourage them to learn Braille so they may read and enrich their lives. If you are an author, please put your books in Braille, we are a somewhat captive audience.

A beautiful book. The author's account of her life in Eastern Africa is utterly mesmerizing. She write with simplicity and a poetic clarity of the African landscape, its people, her experiences and trials trying to run a coffee farm in the Ngong hills, and of her relationship with Denys Finch-Hatton. Her writing provides you with a honest and insightful look at the kikuyus, masai, somali, and the white and indian immigrant settlers of that time and period. You definitely get a strong sense of her love and passion for her African home. She captures eloquently how Africa becomes and stays a part of you.
