One of the best pieces of fiction I have ever read, and I have no explanation as to why. Cather tells this story very well, and realistically.

The chapters telling Tom's story are magnificent and tie the whole book together.

Cather uses an interesting shift in narration in the middle to explain what is going on between the professor and the dead Tom, who haunts the story. Interesting look into human nature and relationships. I adore Cather's style. She really delves into the character's minds and has beautiful descriptions of the scenery. Great book.

“Theoretically he knew that life is possible, may be even pleasant, without joy, without passionate griefs. But it had never occurred to him that he might have to life like that.” Godfrey St Peter is the happy but lonely professor, a centered, kind, model of virtue, success and quirk in a small Kansas university town full of perfectly quirky people. St Peter’s family lives in the shadow of Tom Outland, an orphaned noble savage of the Southwest who comes into their lives with mystery, reciting Latin, hoping to attend college. Outland’s brilliance leads to an invention and a fortune, left to St Peter’s daughter. The novel is a lightly-drawn sketch without malice, villains or much drama. The novel makes you feel like quietly sitting on a porch on the plains, watching the rains come at twilight, with that tingling that evokes mild wonder and a not unhappy awareness of your mortality…if that makes any sense. In short, the bourgeois comforts of middle America lead to existential angst.

Lovely. A little bit melancholy and sadly thought provoking, but in a good way...

A very thought provoking book that asks the reader what is a house: a building, a family, or a place of refuge? Can it be that a house is all three?

I had to hide this book from myself so that I wouldn't finish it all in one sitting. I'm not exactly sure why it touched me...so many soft voices and so many different stories...I wondered how the Professor reconciled his seemingly mediocre life with himself...what had happened between him and the wife that he adored. Was he too smart for her...was it a simple case of growing apart? What ever happened to the hero's good friend. So many unanswered questions and yet such an enjoyable book. It's like eating cotton candy...so sweet while going down but not fufilling.
