An interesting essay comparing the punishment of Sisyphus with the mundane, "absurd", and monotonous existence that most of us lead. He relates this the problem of suicide. Everyone knows what it is like to walk down the street and think: Where do I fit into the grand scheme of things? Camus says these are our moments of clarity and awareness, and we can either despair or hope in spite of everything. While I do not personally agree with some of the arguments Camus makes here, it is a thought-provoking essay. The additional essays are interesting as well.

Its hard not to approve of a book which tackles the difficult issues of suicide & death in its opening passages, all of which are accomplished with great sensitivity & understanding.

The essay presents Absurdism - the philosophy of Albert Camus, who seeks to compare the futility of human life with a sisyphean task to be carried on by Sisyphus for eternity.
With pragmatic examples, that of literary characters - Don Quixote and the suicidal Kirillov, Camus concludes upon seeing meaning not in Christian orthodoxy, but in the sisyphean task itself.
The passage where Camus deliberates upon Absurd in the works of Franz Kafka is worth mentioning.

Albert Camus finds the perfect metaphor for the existential vision of life in THE MYTH OF SISYPHUS. But his conclusion that in the face of such a difficult and ultimately futile task as pushing a large rock up a hill forever, the existential reader must laugh, is contradictory. But I did laugh when Homer found himself naked and chained to a giant rock he must push up a hill forever in THE SIMPSONS. I guess it's funnier when it's a cartoon and he's naked.

Why would a Titan push an immense boulder to the heights of a wicked, earthen half-pipe only to see his great weight roll back upon him, returning cruelly to square one? Why would a man get out of bed only to get back in later that same day? Why live when one is meant only to die? Listen to the wisdom of Camus and find out for yourself the beauty of spiritual Rebellion.

I'm sure we all feel like Sisyphus -- unfortunately most of the time.

This is one of the top five books I have ever read. Camus describes the world in a way I completely agree with but would never be able to express. If you read this book I guarantee you'll be able to live a happier life in spite of the absurdity of it all.
