Humane, sad, human & engrossing. Dick went out on a creative high.
Deals with lead character Angel Archer's involvement with Bishop Archer (and marriage to his son) and his religious & existential unorthodoxy from the late 1960s to 1980 CE.
Brilliantly handled in characters & tone. As an atheist it was mind-blowing (in an awesome way).
I cried.

Meh, not as good as the rest of the Valis series.

This is a strange book but really interesting if you are, like me, fascinated by the religious side of PKD's writing. It is the third part of his VALIS trilogy, a trilogy unique in that none of the books relate to each other in any way except for their religious theme. If, like me, you are an atheist you might be put off but don't be. In fact you will probably be even more interested...

Good read. One of the few books I will almost certainly read again in the future. I first read his last interview during which he tells a lot about his experience writing his book, which gives the experience an extra dimension.

The final PKD book, this is a fictionalized account of the last days of Phil's friend Bishop Timothy Pike. A great book that speculates on Pikes death and his changing beliefs about Christ and his mission, the hidden story thereof, and the twisting of the message by the politics of religion. An excellent novel.

Dick's last book of what I like to call 'The Breakdown Trilogy'. Not really a conventional trilogy- the stories do not follow on but all immerse themselves in a similar quest for some form of religious transcendence. Dick was many things- a poor man's Lovecraft, a near-miss Pynchon but he was able to imbue his work with a quality...a kind of mystic luminosity. Worth reading if you enjoyed VALIS.

"There's another dead Bishop on the landing, Vicar-Sergeant...". VALIS is real.
