A very interesting drug novel, giving a view of the lives of drug dealers and the potential lives they may lead. A bit hard to follow at times, and it seems to lag from time to time, however, in the end it works out to be an interesting novel.

This is arguably my favorite book of all time. Philip K Dick was ahead of his time, because the future he was talking about is sort of going on today... the subject of paranoia is indefinitely the scariest concept put to print.

One of PKD's best works. A lot of his material tended to have a wooden approach to the style of prose, but ironically enough it was the last few works before his death where he really came into his own. I would rate this one higher than Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?, which is supposed to be his masterpiece. The story is so tragic & you feel so much for these people whose lives unravel in a haze of paranoia, drug use, all of which is made worse by an oppressive authority structure which is excessively punitive towards drug use. If it wasn't illegal a lot of the social problems would be alleviated.

I didn't really read this, Paul Giamatti did, I just listened. The book is very funny at least the first 3/4 of it or so. Giamatti's performance added a lot, he did all the voices and the parts in German gave me goosebumps.

My first PKD novel, and not what I was expecting! Apparently this is his most autobiographical, least sci-fi novel, and I have to say, I really liked it. The main character is Bob Arctor, an undercover narcotics officer for the Orange County police, who is trying to find the source of Substance D, a dangerous and addictive new drug. Bob lives with drug users, and ingests enough of the drug himself to him doubt his identity. As a cop, he watches surveillance tape of his own home, and starts to forget that the man he is watching is, in fact, himself. Dick does a marvelous job of putting the reader inside Bob's head, as his grip on reality gradually loosens. In the last scene, Bob is presented with the last piece of the puzzle, but by then his brain is too fried to make the connection. In an afterword, Dick dedicates this book (written in the 70s) to all his friends who were finished off by their heavy drug use in the 60s. A powerful book.

Scanner Darkly is, in my opinion, the best of Dicks late, post-epiphany, books.

It is a non-puritanical warning about the dangers of habitual/recreational drug use. (Several of Dicks friends, and Dick himself had severe problems with drugs) And it is a meditation of surveillance, the state and the self. One of Dick's best, and very funny in its own, poignant, way.

The movie did a decent job with the novel, but didn't really capture it. Worth a read for anyone open to speculative fiction, or folks interested in the 1960s West Coast scene.

A Scanner Darkly is a sci-fi about a Narcotics cop of the not too distant future. It’s the story about how as he does his job the lines of loyalty and reality start to blur. It’s based heavily off the author’s own experience with drug use and offers a powerful and bizarre look into that world. The author offers up some really great and colorful descriptions but doesn’t let them take over the story.
