Sister Helen Prejean writes in a very real, honest, and human accounting of her experience as a spiritual director for two death row inmates. It is a challenging testimony against the death penalty based on experience (both success and failure), research (though probably outdated by now), and both philosophical and religious perspectives (though not expecially religious). This is an important read for those on either side of the issue.

This book really makes you question your opinion on the death penalty. Quick read and although it was a class assigned book. I enjoyed reading it.

Please don't watch the movie after you have read this book. It will ruin it for you. The book is so powerful and devastating. The real life people in this book are fascinating and you find yourself very involved with them as they face death. A MUST READ!

A very poignant look from the inside of a death camp and how it can affect everyone involved. A worthwhile read that can generate thoughts on each side of the argument on capital punishment.

Moving account of the death penalty in the US and one woman's crusade to eliminate it. Contains more than one prisoner who she is a spiritual advisor to on death row. Also details statistics and realities about the disparity and inconsistencey in application of the death penalty in the US. Moving protrayals of the families of the victims as well. Quite good.

this is a story about a nun, who thinks she knows about God's Word. so she tell about her own tale of defending the lives of two raping murders. let me spare you the torment of this book, just don't read it. you are better off reading the dictionary, better for you to learn how to spell aardvark, than to hear about this woman and her fight for "humanity" by fighting for the lives of two men who disregarded life so willingly, and then some.

This book is one of compassion. Although initially about the compassion for the killer, this book eventually brings a marriage between the compassion for both the victim and the killer. There is an almost surreal sense of the warring emotions of Sister Helen, but this doesn't distract from the horror of the crime.

A couple of very good accounts of life on death row written by a nun who comforts some of society's biggest monsters in the weeks and months before we attempt to send them to hell. These are very bad people, but killing them to make a point seems barbaric and out of place in any decent society.

I don't often read non-fiction. It was extremely interesting subject material, made me think, perhaps in the wrong direction but then that is simply a matter of opinion. I did find it hard to get through at times, rather like a text book. Back to the imagination for the next read.
