This book started out strong and I was very interested. But the last few chapters, it started to lose steam and it felt like the author was simply writing it because he had to finish it, not because he had a plan or enjoyed his work. I didn't finish it.

Why on earth did I take so long to start reading this book? I will certainly read more Guterson after this one!!! Extremely thought provoking story that explores human behaviour and related prejudices. It forces us to consider how society is conditioned to sometimes act in a prejudiced manner driven by preconceived notions. The story moves with a meandering easy pace which lets you pause, recollect and review the implications. Recommended if you are not looking for a fast paced book.

A good freshman effort from author David Guterson. A bit too ponderous for my taste in a novel where the modest emotional payoff was not as cathartic as it could have been. Nevertheless, I found it to be an enjoyable read with some rewarding character work. 3 out of 5 stars.

Coming from the Northwest I was compelled to read this book. It was worthwhile but not earth shaking.
