Ah, I loved this book. But I HATE Phillip's huge cliffhanger endings... they don't tie up at all. Even so, yes, this was amazing. I like Will. He's nice :)

The second book in the His Dark Materials trilogy expanded on the fantasy from the first book. It starts off in our world with a boy named Will. He's pretty much the opposite of dear Lyra – responsible, serious, and heavy – and his situation is much more realistic. He lives with his mother, who suffers from a paranoid mental illness, and doesn't know much about his adventurer father, who disappeared when he was very young. But Will soon discovers a door to another world, and in it he finds Lyra.

There's just as much adventure and action in this book as the first, with less scientific-y explanations. (It was probably best that I read them back-to-back, otherwise I might've forgotten the first book's details.) But there are also some sad moments. One in particular made me mist up – I'd grown very fond of one of the characters, who I don't think will survive to make an appearance in the third book. But I'm hopeful.

I liked it. There's nothing like it, even still. Pullman not only introduces things to the reader that doesn't exist but helps the reader to imagine the things he's invented such as the using of the knife or the compass. He comes up with whole new worlds and manages to make everything make sense. I liked the first book better but this was still good.

This is Pullman's second book, the much anticipated follow up on his first book, the Golden Compass, which was also very good. This book is a little shorter, but packed with actions and twists that will leave you breathless. This book features the new character, Will, and our beloved Lyra Silvertonuge, of Oxford. Do they fall in love? Are they sworn enemies? Will the Subtle Knife destroy this world, or save it?
Well, honestly, I'd tell you, except I hate to ruin the fun. My consolation:
READ IT.

best book of the trilogy, showing a gift for characterization missing in the other books. the ideas are big, but not so big that the author fails to capture them.

This is an absolutely fantastic book, one of those that once you start reading it's really hard to put down, even when it's 3:30 in the morning, you have to be up at 5 and are having to hold your eyelids open.

The story introduce 2 new worlds, one of which is our world. The new character, Will, is brilliantly written, another strong child character. The story develops wonderfully and is totally compelling. My only criticism is the ending, it's rather abrupt and doesn't feel like an appropriate point to stop the story. Can't wait to find out what happens next, just wish I knew where I had left my copy of "The Amber Spyglass" :-(

The author added too much of his on views of religion, which ruined the book for me.

I think I read this book in middle school. It was still new, and the third book was not yet published. I really enjoyed the Golden Compass, so I checked this out. It was disappointing. Although I don't remember most of it, I didn't like that it was in Modern day England, and the end of this book did not make me want to read the last book. This is, however, coming from my memory 10+ years ago. Maybe I would like it now...now that it's going to be a movie and all.
