I guess this confirms that as much as I'd like to, I just don't love Hemingway. The simplified narrative just doesn't hold my interest. I especially wanted to love this book, being an early classic on Africa, but it's just not that interesting. Sorry, Ernest.

Interesting read. Takes one back to an earlier time - there's an odd environmental ethic in here as Papa goes about shooting animals for his rich friends in New York. But there's also some brilliant insights into writing and living and the experience of being an American that Hemingway fans may enjoy.

A pleasant romp across the African countryside with Papa Hemingway while he drinks whiskey from a tin cup and blasts all God's creation. It suspiciously reads like fiction...no doubt some of it is. No matter. I was entertained by the vivid descriptions of the African landscape and its people, brought to life with Hemingway's trademark wit and insight, which is all I hoped to get from it.

The story of a simple hunting safari in Africa, but it's so much more. One large metaphor for man's relation with his fellow man. Worth the read

In every book of Ernest Hemingway, protogonist of the book is himself. The man generally is extremely masculine and charismatic. In an actual life, E.Hemingway had a trip to Africa. He did hunt lion.. It was a courageous thing to do for a man according to him.
This is a part of a collection! I recomment you to have his all stories...

Amazing descriptions of hunting big game in Africa, less of a novel than a travel book (and I never read travel books), but I was still very taken by this book.

Hemingway's worst that I have read; turgid prose most of the time, redeemed only by the final sable hunt, which is him at his best. He should be read--go get For Whom the Bell Tolls, it's truly a work of art.

I like Hemingway. I like travel books. I like books that involve people shooting stuff. Green Hills of Africa delivers on all three.

For me, the fact that it was nonfiction helps a lot. Nonfiction was really Hemingway's forte, and it's a shame that most people don't realize that - even his fiction books have characters and events heavily influenced, if not directly stolen, from his real life.

All told, it's quintessential Hemingway, with all the historical and cultural insights of a blunt look at Africa during the midst of its colonial era. The book gets docked a few marks for repetition (one can only read about failed hunting expeditions for so long), but earns a solid four stars.

This is a different Hemingway book, but I really liked it. It is so descriptive of the Africa he experienced in his matter of fact, succinct style. People talk about books transporting you to another life, and if you get into this book, it will give you that feeling and maybe at the same time an insight into who Hemingway was. (Or at least who he wanted people to think he was.)

If one ever wished to know not only how easy it was to kill big game in Africa back in the day, but also the exact number of large beasts that Hemingway could kill in a day, a week, and a month then this is the book for you. The killing is mixed in with short odes to the beauty of Africa, which may have been more moving if one did not worry about whether the three Rhinoceri killed were the last of their kind.

First things first. I think many people don't like Hemingway, which is fair. But if you do like him and you like the idea of a literary man in Africa hunting for sport, you will enjoy the book.
I thought he made some interesting philosophical observations in the book and does a wonderful job of instilling the sights, sounds and smells of Africa. However, if you don't like Hemingway or you don't know him, this is not a book with which to start.

Non-fiction? It's kind of odd to read, just for that reason, but in the end it's still Hemingway. The story isn't as amazing as some of his other novels, but it's still his writiing and you can get some stuff out of it. Just don't go into it expecting another great novel. It's good for what it is.

Honestly I find myself disappointed after reading this book. Usually Hemingway is a great and identifiable author. I loved For Whom the Bell Tolls and Old Man and the Sea and others but after reading this I am confused as to how the lack of emotion and strength so common in his books was lacking in this one. The book follows him through a hunting safari in Africa and all you do is read about him shooting antelope. It's pretty boring. You can tell it is Hemingway but not his best work. I read this after reading Paul Theroux's Dark Star Safari and I have to say that I found the latter a better and more insightful book.
I wouldn't recommend this book. If you want Hemingway, I would recommend A Farewell to Arms. If you want Africa, read Dark Star Safari.
