"A Moveable Feast" is a book of Ernest Hemingways memoirs from 1920s Paris, when he and his wife, Hadley, lived in an expatriate writers' community. It is a soothing, picturesque compilation of vignettes from when he and his wife Hadley "were very poor and very happy."

It chronicles their young love: "We ate well and cheaply and drank well and cheaply and slept well and warm together and loved each other."

Hemingway spent his days in Parisian cafes, drinking a lot and writing a lot, describing the culture and the surroundings beautifully.

He tells amusing stories of other authors like Gertrude Stein and of particularly peculiar tales of his friendship with F. Scott Fitzgerald.

For me, this book was a sweet escape. To read the pages and travel to Paris in the 1920s, read the thoughts and ponderings of another introspective soul... definitely a wonderful work.

I absolutely love this book. I learned so much about some of the American artists who were instrumental in the development of early 20th-century English literature. It was a refreshing and enlightening read in so many ways. Hemingway has more than peaked my interest in reading more of his books, as well as those of other writers from that time. I am in complete admiration. His writing style is beautiful... perfectly descriptive and simply breathtaking. I was transported back in time with pleasure.

Read it a while back and I thought it was just OK. Then I read it while in Paris. Makes quite a difference. Way better.

Having read Henry Miller's colourful descriptions of his life in Paris, I started this book with high expectations, which I kept up to the very end. I waited and searched for some plot, some at least half-way interesting narration or passage, for anything that goes beyond sober and superficial descriptions - it wouldn't come. I had never read Hemingway before and heard he was not the emotional type of writer, still this little book had not much to offer to me. Neither was it moveable nor a feast, sorry.

I read this upon my return from a vacation in Paris and was interested in seeing what Papa had to say about his life there. It's hard to read this without wondering what's the point. Stylistically, this is an unusual approach for a memoir. Not sure if that's because this was published posthumously and he actually didn't finish it, or what.

I enjoyed learning about the early life of this great author -- particularly his encounters with Gertrude Stein and his travails with F. Scott Fitzgerald.

It's a quick read, so no harm - no foul, but I wouldn't put this at the top of the must read list unless you are crazy about Hemingway.

Another great book by Hemingway. I would probably read these memoirs before any other Hemingway book if I could go back and read them again. It provides the reader with a great understanding of Hemingway the person, his writing style, and his life in Paris during his 20s.
