Not one of Hemingway's best, which may be why he didn't publish it when he was alive. Still it is entertaining, and a must for a Hemingway Junkie

I am a huge fan of Hemingway, and was skeptical of this unpublished work. I thought it would be badly cobbled together. I was wrong. This is an exciting account of his last Africa safari, and true Hemingway in style and content. This book is definitely worthy of a ceremonial beer - or two!

Snooze fest. Posthumous work of little to no interest to anyone but a die hard Hemingway fanatic.

Hemingway's last hunting 'diary' brought to us posthumously by his son Patrick. Written a year after the events and given an extra fictional flair, Big Ern nonetheless imparts some startling reality to the actions, emotions and relationships surrounding this adventure. Whilst his fourth and last wife, Mary is intent on bagging the Big Lion, the local tribes round about try to sort out their jurisdictional differences. Pop, the great white hunter, is no longer around to rein in the mistakes or growl at the inadequacies in the hunting pack, and Ernie is left to take charge in the best way he can. Vivid and emotive descriptions prowl alongside cutting and transparent dialogue to shoot straight to the heart of matters. The plains of Africa have never seemed so wild.

Vivere in Africa. Dipendere dalla natura e da una religione che ci si inventa attimo dopo attimo: credere nell'Africa.

One of the more pompous Hemingway books, True at First Light does wrestle with some interesting themes. I really enjoyed reading about how his wife, Mary, aggressively tries to hunt larger lion in a more dangerous manner than Hemingway's previous wife in order to prove her dominance to her husband.

Definitely not Hemingway's best. Not my favorite by any means.

Since this is a fictional memoir, based largely on a real memoir (twice the length), it lacks the kind of attention to detail Hemingway put in most of his fiction (this is edited by his son). It still reads, and feels like Hemingway, it just isn't For Whom the Bell Tolls, or one of his other masterpieces. A good read, but not his best work.

You wouldn't want this to be your first Hemingway, but for those who are well-acquainted with Papa's style, characters, and view of the world, this is an enjoyable read. It's far better than the carping critics made it out to be when it first appeared. Like later Twain, it includes some wonderful passages, among his best, as well as some fairly dreadful ones, among his worst. I'm content to take the good with the bad.

Made me wish I could live during that time and follow the protagonist on all his misadventures.
