Very well written story about racism and the sputtering rise of unions after WWI (and the often ugly attempts to keep them out) told from the perspective of a young black man and a young Irish man whose paths cross in Boston. Very violent and not for the tender of heart. Bad things happen to good people over and over. In an interesting aside, Babe Ruth pops up over and over.

it was hard to get into, and while the babe ruth line was tied back in at the end, i almost gave up on the story because of the first 50 pages or so. but it turned out to be a very interesting examination of the nascent labor movement in boston and i ended up enjoying it.

It was kind of boring. Not what I expected from this author after reading a lot of his other books, but ok. Kind of sad.

What a great book. This is my first by Lehane and I'm planning on reading more now. Starts off slow but pays off towards the middle.

I'm giving this four stars b/c it was so damn ambitious--not b/c I enjoyed it that much. It was actually a bit laborious slogging through these 700 pages, but I give Lehane credit for the historical scope of this novel and his attempt to weave several disparate story lines together with relative success.

Great book. I'm sorry to finish it. Reminds me a lot of Doctorow's "Ragtime". I learned a lot about a time I didn't know much about.
Another book I am going to be very sorry to finish. A very different book for Lehane. The parallels between 1917 when this took place and today are astounding. Especially, the "terrorists who hate us because they envy our way of life"

The story was good, but the pace moved way too slowly.

He writes well. Book reminds me of The Invisible Man.
