Definitely for adolescents, but it's an engaging story. Having listened to the audio book, I could have done without the effectual music in the background during the tense parts. Kind of lame.

From the Battle of the Books reading list at the elementary school. A great read aloud book. Teaches the attitude and behaviors of wilderness survival.

I have been reading a lot of classic kids books. I am rather weak on boy-oriented books so I picked up "Hatchet". Wow! This is a thrilling book. It is the story of 13-year-old Brian who is stranded in the Canadian wilderness when his plane crashes. Who he survives and changes is an amazing story.

Thirteen-year-old Brian is on his way to visit his dad in Canada, shortly after his parents divorced. The plane he was in crashed after the pilot had a heart attack. He survived for 54 days and was rescued jus before winter began. The sole reason he survived was the hatchet his mom gave him. Read this book and be amazed. And if you like this one, maybe you should read "Brian's Winter" By Gary Paulsen. The story about what would have happened if Brian hadn't been rescued.

The only reason I haven't given this book a perfect score is because of the weak ending. Hatchet is full of awesome writing that will entertain a child or adult reader. I have enjoyed this book as both. And as someone who is now thinking a lot about how disconnected we are to the food we eat, this book had many profound and thought provoking ideas.

Definitely one of my favorite books from my early teen years which inspired me. I remember being enthralled with his journey and thinking how great it would be to have the same experience. Of course as an adult, I don't so much want to be stranded on a deserted island... but it was a complete eye opener. Whenever I read books such as Into the Wild by Krakauer or watch Lost, this is always what comes to mind.

To me, this is one of the essential novels for any kid interested in the wild outdoors. I became entranced by this in elementary school, for it is a haunting story of survival, even if the character is not necessarily the most believable of children's literary characters. Still, Paulsen's melodic detail and pacing paint a terrifying and yet wondrous picture of the wilderness, and the reader becomes obsessed with Brian's trek of survival. In a way, it is the dark twin of Jean Craighead George's "My Side of the Mountain". Paulsen, a naturalist himself, gives plenty of surprisingly practical ideas for survival (though there are some I would not recommend). Either way, Brian's adventure is an admirable one indeed.

Although Gary Paulsen's novels are geared toward young teens, I personally find them delightful.

In "Hatchet", a young Brian is flying over an L-shaped lake on his way to spend the summer with his mother as his parents are divorced. Unfortunately, the plane crashes into the lake and Brian survives but the pilot dies.

Brian spends a many weeks living alone on a piece of land with no food and no water and must invent ways of saving himself. He has to learn how to make a makeshift slingshot to kills birds and rabbits in order to eat, learns how to catch fish, which berries he thinks he can and can't eat safely etc. The story is simply marvelous.

Following Hatchet, Mr. Paulsen had so many fans write to him asking what would have happened if Brian had NOT been rescued from the island that he went on to write another two books about Brian. One was called "Brian's Winter" and other name escapes me right now but you should really pick up all 3 and read them. They're very engaging!

I'm really surprised by the negative reviews and am beginning to wonder if as adults we tend to appreciate it more or the teachers have simply taken away the magic of story by being too technical. This is a fascinating book which i really found hard to put down.Contrary to what others say, i found it fast paced and thrilling almost like the TV series 24. Every minute was survival and its fascinating to see the maturity of this boy develop and to see his sensitivity become more heightened where normal 12 yr olds are oblivious about. Gary has certainly done an amazing job of getting into the mind of this 12 yr old survivor.

You gotta admit Brian's the type of guy that you'd laugh at, at school. The old Brian, anyways. The new Brian's the type of guy that I'd admire... something inspiring about being able to push past the mental barriers to accomplish the physical. Part of me still wishes it were a real story, so that I could know there was just one more incredible person out there. What really catches me about this book is that the character grows, and not only through your typical "I-became-a-better-person"... the book doesn't define his changes as totally good or totally bad, but you see that he changes, and that he grows in realizing himself. And that's something that most of us can hopefully connect to, whether it's getting past thinking life is hopeless (leading to suicide), or pulling through the divorce, or fighting to survive, whether in the urban or the wilderness.

Brian is on his way to visit his father in Canada when the pilot of his small plane has a heart attack. Though Brian manages to gain control of the plane, it goes off course and he crashes into a lake. He survives the crash, but finds himself alone in the wilderness with only the clothes on his back and the hatchet his mother gave him.

As Brian struggles to survive on his own, he gradually gains the patience and skills he needs to keep himself alive.

A great survival story.

I wish that the main character had just died in the crash. That, at least, would have spared me from having to reading the rest of the book. I read this in grade seven, and hated it. I tried again when I was 18 and still hated it. So much for thinking age was the reason I couldn't stand this book.
Do not waste your time, this has got to be one of the most poorly written books that is forced down young high school kids throats when it is better off buried.

Lol. I am a little surprised at the negative reviews…Perhaps I just feel differently about this book because I was not FORCED to read it in school-For I know I most certainly hated every book I was made to read with my class, no matter how acclaimed it seemed to be...Anyway, I am not sure why but, I just loved this book! I believe it was the first 'real' book I had ever finished all on my own at 8-9 years old. I read it again at 12 and 15 and still found it just as charming...Hey; before down it, you know very well that a required read -is that for a reason. They don’t just choose any old thing. This is a great book for 5th-7th grade readers.

This book is somewhat of a legend in my town. To the kid with the AWESOME name who made the rape comment, you are my hero.

Whether he's repeating "the fire" or "the time" or 'the secret" three times (i guess for emphasis) or picking berries for what seems like a third of the book, i couldn't find interest except in laughing at how horrible this was. i do honestly have to say that this is one of the most enjoyable books i've ever read, because it was. i laughed throughout the entire thing.

awful, awful book.
i hate it.
don't read it, or the sequel.
horrible.

Hatchet is a story of lone survival in the wilderness. When a young boy off to visit his father in Northern Canada, is stranded off-course when the pilot of the small bush plane taking him there has a heart attack, he is forced to perform a crash landing. While the boy fashions himself a shelter and works on taking care of the necessary amenities of life, he starts to become a different person. With a new found appreciation of nature and beauty, a carefully learned patience and a dedicated persistence and drive, he notices the marked difference in his thoughts and feelings.

Author Gary Paulsen infuses divorce and infidelity as part of the story line, and repeatedly has the boy, Brian, flashback to stressful images and thoughts related to his parents failed relationship. Although this inclusion seems slightly contrived and sometimes unnecessary, it’s interesting to note how the old Brian was eager to inform his father of ‘the secret,’ while the newly enlightened Brian decided better of it.

One of my all time favorite novels! I first read this in class in the 7th grade and have read it once nearly every year since. I love the personal struggle and growth in Brian's character and maturity that he goes through. Gary Paulsen does a great job! You almost feel you are right along side Brian, battling the hated mosquitos, the moose, the hunger and his mistakes.

I was very pleased with this book. It was the reality of a boy who learned how to survive. In the beginning it started a little slow, but got moving right after that. Suspense was filled through-out the whole book. Inferences had to made, which is very healthy for a reader. If you take your time in reading this book, you'll be rather pleased. As was I. 'Hatchet' by Gary Paulsen was a very pleasing read.
