I loved this book for its dungeon crawl atmosphere, on top of its brilliant writing.

The second book of the Earthsea Cycle introduces us to Tenar, The Eaten One, or the high priestess of the Nameless Ones. Tenar was selected at birth to hold this position and she loves to do so until the wizard Ged appears.

Ged is there to rob the secret vaults of the Nameless Ones to find a ring that is rumored to help restore peace. Tenar discovers Ged when he enters the underground tunnels she loves to be in.

A nice second book to the series, and it also sets up the third (almost done with it) quite well. I wish we were able to see more of Ged's life inbetween the books, but the glimpses of his life that the books do show us are fascinating.

After the epic majesty of Book 1, this was sort of a let-down.

Upon rereading it, I was surprised by the depth of what I had always considered a children's novel. I enjoyed the short read and think Mrs. Le Guin makes some nice points.

I don't understand quite how Le Guin packs so much depth and feeling into her relatively short novels. Great book in a great series!

Cute... but I was expecting *much* more, after the first book.

Wow. Holly momma. I am officially an Ursula K Le Guin fan. The story was captivating, and I didn't want to put the book down! And then, behind the story, Le Guin keeps giving you peeks at a larger truth. By the end she comes full circle and you found yourself enriched not only by the story, but also by the journey she's taken you on. Highly recommended, after reading The Wizard of Earthsea first, of course!!

loved it even though i felt uncomfortable and unhappy with the way all the female power in the book was permitted/denied by male power/authority. The fourth book of course puts all that into context.

I loved the courtesy of ged but I also felt his emotionless and workaholic attitude to arha (i know that's not her real name) at the end of the book was a bit of a betrayal even if he on some level acknowledges that she is wiser than him.

He is a bit to cerebral sometime despite having faced his shadow (of course I know now that over the next two books that cool poise unravels lol)

I had to read this in grade 9 as an extra project, but I really liked the book. It's very descriptive and interesting. It's almost good just as a stand alone book.
