I loved this book when i first read it at some stage of high school. for some reason i hid it, thinking my mother would disapprove of it. It is awesome. I read it to my kids when they were little. Alanna is on some levels tomboyish but being female is also an imortant part of her and it is this balance that makes her great.

Alanna the main character disguises herself as a boy to become a knight. She manages to do this, because she has a twin brother, who preferred to study magic instead. Alanna (or Alan as the other boys know her) trains hard to keep up, and is at first constantly teased for her small stature, high voice, smooth skin and fear of swimming (they swim nude in this country, thus the problem). Then she meets the Prince; Prince Jonathan, Heir to the Throne of Tortall, he is sensitive, but also pragmatic. Although he doesn't like being royalty, he realizes that he can use his name and position to protect others such as Alanna. He is constantly accompanied by his loyal sidekick Raoul of Goldenlake. Raoul and Jonathan have no reservations about coming to Alanna's aid, particularly against the hateful Rallon (I think that's how it's spelled) of Malven. It's Middle School, with weapons and magic, and they all live together on the same hall, in other words WAR!! in other words a jolly good book.

What a great find! Here begins a brilliantly written tale of a girl who proves that dedication and hard work can make her as able, if not more so, than her male peers. As a lover of the niche, I can say that Alanna embodies everything I want in a cross-dressing heroine, and I am delighted to watch her as she grows.

Upon reading this, I don't understand why I disliked Tamora Pierce when I was younger. A lot of the elements in this book are similar to the Arrows/Queen's Own trilogy of Mercedes Lackey. Okay, so the story arc is shorter, because it's only 216 pages, and the writing is a tad more simplistic. And it doesn't hold my attention quite as well as Mercedes Lackey, but still.

This book was still pretty riveting, and I found myself shipping Jon/Alanna not even halfway through it. I hoped he'd find out she was a girl somehow, regardless of her telling him, because I knew he could handle it. His cousin Roger reminds me so much of Elspeth's uncle in Arrows of the Queen.

It's onto the next book. Yes, I realize I'm probably too old to be reading these for the first time.

Alanna the First Adventure would seem to be your typical fantasy novel---a young noble girl swaps places with her twin brother so she can fulfill her dream of becoming a lady knight in a feudal society that is less-than-flexible about such things.

It only sounds typical because fantasy and science fiction seems to riddled with female heroines these days. This is merely perception, however. Strong female protagonists in literature and movies have certainly increased in the past decade, but how many of them how many of them are heroes? Not many. How many existing heroines are the protagonist of the story? Fewer still. Most strong women showcased in fantasy and science fiction are powerful sidekicks and nothing more.

No matter how typically fantasy the book may seem to the some, Alanna remains a uniquely strong and complex young lady who refuses to accept as right what is commonly accepted and, compelled by a sense of honor and duty, fights to better her country on both a physical as well as sociological front. I recommend Tammy's Alanna series to anyone who is willing to look beyond the shallow vaneer of fantastical stereotype and see the greater complexity and purpose of the character and series.
