A lot of the stories in this collection are very forgettable--as my thesis adviser would call them, "generic Saturday Evening Post drivel." Fitzy's best stories, however, as is the case with his novels, transcend his failures. "Babylon Revisited" is the best of the bunch and makes a great companion piece to The Great Gatsby...

I'm not sure why it's taken me 45 years to appreciate F. Scott Fitzgerald, being a Minnesota guy and all, but boy could he write! This compilation includes 13 short stories that have St. Paul (and Minneapolis) as the setting. For a man who didn't often speak well of his home town, his stories sure reflect a different tone --they're very nostalgic. This book is worth taking a look at if only for Patricia Hampl's introduction -- she writes a loving and direct biography of the man.

I had to return it when I moved, and it doesn't look like my new library has "St. Paul Stories," but I'd recommend it. I wish I would have had time to write down all of the poignant quotes I'd marked!
